After Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi rebuked the Maharashtra government for rejecting the report of the judicial commission on Adarsh scam, knives are now out for chief minister Prithviraj Chavan with the opposition seeking his resignation.
The Congress scion said he thought that the Chavan-led Congress-NCP government should not have rejected the report of the judicial commission which probed the Adarsh housing society scam. Later, Chavan had said he would consult his colleagues on the matter. The report had held former Congress CM Ashok Chavan, Shivajirao Nilangekar Patil, late Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde responsible. Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said the state government needed to be dissolved as it had lost its credibility with Gandhi, seen as criticising the working of his own men in the state.
Speaking in Nashik, Uddhav said, “Chavan was a chief minister with a good image but with respect to the present issue of Adarsh report, his credibility is also in question and hence the state government needs to be dissolved.”
“The chief minister must resign immediately,” demanded Shiv Sena group leader in the state legislative assembly Subhash Desai, adding that Chavan had acted in a manner at variance with his party leadership’s sentiments. “This is just drama by Rahul Gandhi... Congress, NCP and Prithviraj Chavan,” he charged.
While the NCP has tried to shrug off responsibility in the rejection of the report, a section of the state Congress is also seen at loggerheads with Chavan.
Desai demanded that FIRs be lodged against Congress and NCP leaders named in the report and a CID probe be conducted into the benami flats in the building. He sought that the CBI get permission to prosecute former CM Ashok Chavan whose relatives have flats in the Colaba high-rise and who has been found to have been indulged in a quid pro quo.
Desai also slammed Rahul for seeking a re-think on the decision. “Rahul Gandhi must give an order to Prithviraj Chavan as he is the high-command,” he added.
“Considering Prithviraj Chavan’s style and the functioning of the Congress, this (decision to reject the report) cannot happen without the concurrence of the leadership,” said BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari.
