The white-and-red coloured vehicles of TABcab, a city-based cab service, have turned rusty and lying defunct at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Tardeo for over a year now. While the vehicles are parked at the RTO allegedly due to the non-payment of renewal fees by drivers and the radio cab service's operator, the parking is coming in the way of the new car owners that visit the RTO for approvals and checks.

Nearly 15 vehicles of TABcab are parked at the RTO on the portion newly-laid with paver blocks inside the RTO premises. The vehicles are in an overall bad condition, with their tyres deflated and bodies rusted. The RTO officials said that these vehicles have been impounded by them for reasons such as non-payment of renewal fees, lack of fitness certificates and other taxes. According to sources, these vehicles were stopped while plying on the city roads and when asked for correct papers, the drivers failed to produce them. "Either the cab driver or service operator has to pay the fine or we disallow the vehicles to ply on the road for a year. But now some of these vehicles belonging to TABcab have been lying here for the past 15 to 17 months," said an official from the RTO at Tardeo.

The vehicles have now become a burden for the RTO officials, who are considering either scrapping or auctioning them after following the correct procedures. "It has been over a year since we asked them to pick up these vehicles. We have also sent letters and reminders," said another official. According to sources, there are a few cabs belonging to TABcab similarly parked at the RTO in Andheri as well.

"We give these cars to operate as cabs to the drivers. We do not know the legalities of the reasons they are lying at the RTO. We have not received any intimation from RTO officials about the same," said a spokesperson from TABcab.

    LOSING BUSINESS

    • Ever since cab aggregators like Uber and Ola entered the market, they have eaten into the business of cabs registered under the phone fleet taxi scheme like Meru and TABcab which were running through call centers.
