An incident of gang war was reported in Arthur Road jail on Thursday, where two under-trials were rushed for immediate treatment after a fight broke out between them.

According to the police, the incident took place around 11am when the two accused prisoners, identified as Gopal Shetty and Salim Khan, allegedly attacked each other with a blade and a sharp weapon. Shetty had been arrested by the crime branch under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) and Khan is under trial for an attempt to murder case. The duo had not been on good terms over the past few days after a dispute broke out between them.

On Thursday, the duo got into a heated argument and started scuffling with each other. Khan first assaulted Shetty with a blade, leaving the latter with wounds on his forehead and right hand. Khan, too, was attacked by Shetty, which left him wounded as well.

The police immediately resolved the fight and rushed the accused to JJ Hospital, where they are under medication. This is the second such incident in the jail, after four accused were recently rushed to hospital due to a similar gang war that took place within the jail's premises.

"We are investigating the case and trying to find out where the accused are getting weapons and other material from. We shall also see to it that no accidents occur in the future. The wounded prisoners are being treated in hospital," said deputy commissioner of police Ashok Dudhe.
