Ruling the art of royal dressing is not every one’s cup of tea. While many would like to believe that dressing like a royal is no mean feat, it surely takes more than just wearing something and walking out in public for the sake of it.

A lot of research, fittings and careful consideration of the event one is attending, rules and protocols are kept in mind while selecting an outfit for a royal for every occasion.

Among the many royals from across the globe, in the last few decades, who have presented themselves as fashion icons, Princess Diana, truly was one whose fashion choices had an impact globally. While she effortlessly embraced royal etiquette, she made sure that her personal style and choices were not compromised and that she set her own rules. From her 'revenge dress' to breaking protocol by not wearing gloves to public outings, Diana played by her own rules.

A true style icon, Princess Diana’s sartorial selections, impacted the fashion industry, her fans and followers in more ways than one.

In fact, her fashion influence was such that her daughter-in-laws Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, often pay tribute to her impeccable style in subtle ways. From Kate’s maternity dress to her getting Diana’s blue ribbon seen in her wedding dress to Meghan sporting the royal’s ring on the evening of her wedding night, the two have often paid tribute to their late mother-in-law.

However, on Princess Diana’s death anniversary, we take a look back at her fashion sensibilities and how she made a mark as a style icon in her own way, using tricks that we can’t even think of.

Clutches

Clutches come in very handy for the royals and are used for various purposes including avoiding a handshake. However, Princess Diana has been captured using them as a tool or stategic weapon to prevent unflattering images of herself being spalshed across tabloids and covering her modesty when she got out of the car, on several occasions.

Experiments with accessories

Princess Diana, whose fashion sense bewitched one and many, would often experiment with accessories. From wearing different coloured gloves to sporting a jewelled headband as a choker, Diana sure knew how to experiment with her accessories.

Matching Stockings

Princess Diana knew how to pull off any dress with comfort, style and grace. She would more often than not, match the colour of her stockings with the colour of her outfits. In what became a fashion trend, Diana looked ethereal every time she stepped out wearing a ‘royal’ garment with matching stockings.

Blue eyeliner

While royals are meant to have a conservative approach as far as personal style is concerned, Princesses Diana loved to experiment and try new looks every now and then. The blue eyeliner— a signature look of her’s — was one such experiment that became talk of the town back then.

Her blue eyes, accentuated with a blue pencil colour, only made the royal look more ravishing in very sense. However, it is believed that her makeup artiste Mary Greenwell, weaned her off the idea of wearing a blue eyeliner.

Repeating clothes

Princess Diana’s sartorial choices were very regal. Every garment had a certain elegance to it. And the grace with which the royal carried herself in them, is beyond words to describe.

As attractive and elegant as the dresses were, Princess Diana loved to repeat her outfits in ways they looked absolutely new and refreshing.

These and several other factors, contributed in making Princess Diana the style icon she is till this day.
