V junkies like me would vouch that Vikings is a drama rooted in history derived from the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the iconic Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. For those, who aren’t familiar with the series, the show depicts Ragnar as a farmer who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king, with the support of his family and fellow warriors: his brother Rollo, his son Björn  Ironside, and his wives—the shieldmaiden  Lagertha and the princess Aslaug.

AXN, in association with the Gold’s Gym, gave me the opportunity to sweat it out and feel like a true warrior with a specially customised training session. The Vikings is famous around the world to attain the perfect Warrior body. Back in the day, warriors had no gyms/machines and had used their own body weight to work out such as push ups, squats etc.

Being the fitness freak that I am, I managed to perform these exercises back to back for three rounds with two minute rest in between each set. The jump squats charged me up for the session which was followed by plank to push up which strengthens the core. The  Jab — Cross Punches were a bit of a challenge and need concentration and focus — it helps one gain confidence, a great body posture and also overall agility. The Mountain Climbers session helps one sweat it out and also adds to the staying power and mental toughness. Being a gym junkie, I try and do crunches every alternate days so the oblique crunches which were part of the workout added gravitas to the entire session. The Burpees is the heart of the warrior workout — you begin in a standing position, drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground followed by kicking your feet back into a plank position, while keeping your arms extended. The feet are immediately returned to the squat position and one stands up. I really enjoyed doing it. The  knee kicks too tightens your core and helps you improve focus. The worm walks can be a bit of a challenge for some people but with practice, they can be a breeze. I really enjoyed doing the worm walk. The Upper cut punches were the highpoint of the workout session which involved a punchused in boxing that travels along a vertical line at the opponent’s chin or solar plexus.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the warrior workout and aim to incorporate Jab Cross Punches and Upper Cut Punches in my daily workouts too.

Vikings season 1-4 premieres on AXN starting September 18, 2017 every Monday to Friday at 10 PM
