Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in the final of IPL 2020 and if one looks at a peculiar trend, then Shreyas Iyer's team could win the title.
Delhi Capitals have made it to the final of the Indian Premier League for the first time when they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2020 at the Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi. This was only their second win ever in the IPL playoff history and this helped them reach the final of the tournament for the first time. Delhi Capitals will be looking to create history by winning the tournament for the first time but it will not be easy as they take on Mumbai Indians at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Delhi Capitals have lost to Mumbai Indians three times in IPL 2020, losing both the league games by a big margin as well as Qualifier 1 in Dubai by 57 runs. However, if one looks at a peculiar trend every four years in IPL, then Delhi Capitals are the favorites to win the title.
What is the peculiar trend? The year 2020 is a leap year. The previous leap years in IPL were 2016 and 2012. In those leap years in IPL, two new teams won the title. In IPL 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders ended the dominance of the Chennai Super Kings franchise when they won the final in Chepauk. After four years, with the trio of Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings dominating the IPL, one new team ended the dominance.
Sunrisers Hyderabad put on a brilliant show in IPL 2016 and led by the inspirational David Warner who hit 848 runs in the whole tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in the final to win the IPL title for the first time. In IPL 2020, once again a leap year, will Delhi Capitals end the dominance of the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings clout of titles in the tournament?
Inconsistency in IPL
Delhi Capitals started the tournament on a bright note with some good wins. They were on top of the table for a fair bit of time but once the tournament progressed, they lost momentum and lost four consecutive games on the trot. They only managed to seal their spot in the last league game by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by a narrow margin.
In the first Qualifier, Delhi Capitals suffered a big blow as Mumbai Indians put on yet another dominant show to prolong their misery in playoffs. However, Delhi Capitals bounced back in style with some innovative batting to get the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad and advance to the final for the first time.
