Indian Navy has commneced the airlift operations in Trichur, Aluva and Muvattupuzha area. The airlift operation by Indian Navy has so far rescued 36 people stranded in the state. People are being airlifted and are being sheltered in the naval base.

Indian Navy has commneced the airlift operations in Trichur, Aluva and Muvattupuzha area. The airlift operation by Indian Navy has so far rescued 36 people stranded in the state. People are being airlifted and are being sheltered in the naval base. Food and water are also being planned to drop. 

The death toll from the fresh spell of monsoon fury since August 8 has risen to 75. A red alert has been sounded in 12 of the 14 districts. Massive landslide killed eight more people in Palakkad district of Kerala on Thursday even as there was no let-up in the torrential rains in the state where additional defence teams have been rushed to scale up rescue and relief operations.

Rise in flood waters in Periyar river due to continuous rains and opening of all shutters of all major dams including Mullaperiyar, Cheruthoni, part of Idukki reservoir, and Idamalayar, have severely hit life of people in the downstream areas. 

The Supreme Court on Thursday termed as "grave" the flood situation in Kerala and agreed to hear a plea seeking Centre's mediation between Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments on the issue of the Mullaperiyar Dam crossing the 142 ft threshold.

The plea seeks a decision on disaster management steps in the background of the floods, opening of 33 dams in Kerala, confusion between Kerala and Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers as water in the Mullaperiyar Dam has crossed the 142-ft threshold.

With Kerala facing one of the worst floods in history rescue opeartions are underway and 12 more NDRF teams have been sent to the flood-hit state. Six teams each are being airlifted from Delhi and Gandhinagar (Gujarat) and they will be dropped at Thiruvananthapuram today, a force spokesperson said.  

Indian Navy took to Twitter and posted a video of the rescue operations.
