The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has set-up a three-member committee to probe ragging of first year MBBS students at Motilal Nehru Medical College in Allahabad. Over 100 students were allegedly forced to tonsure their heads by seniors.

In reply to a question at the UP Council, the Medical Education Minister Ashutosh Tandon said that the government has taken serious note of the ragging incident in Allahabad and has setup a three-member committee to probe the matter.

The committee has been directed to submit report within five days after meeting the first year students.

Tandon said that after media reports, the District Magistrate Allaahabad had sent the ADM City to the medical college but none of the first year student gave any statement to him about the ragging incident.

The three-member committee included Additional Director Medical education, ADM City Allahabad, and Principal of Ganesh Shanker Vidhyarthi Medical College Kanpur. They have also been directed to suggest ways to check ragging incidents.

Though the medical college had denied any incident of ragging within the campus, a report from the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) Allahabad forced the state government to order the probe. The report stated that about 93 first year MBBS students were forced by seniors to shave off their heads. Students were not lodging any complaints as seniors have threatened to ruin their careers, the report added.
