Two Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, including the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Chaubepur in Kanpur, have been arrested for tipping off gangster Vikas Dubey before the encounter on July 3 in which eight policemen were killed.

Former SHO Vinay Tiwari and Beat Incharge KK Sharma have been arrested, IG Kanpur Range Mohit Agarwal said.

According to the official, they were present during the encounter but fled the site of the incident during the operation.

Kanpur SSP Dinesh Prabhu said it has been found during the probe that Tiwari and Sharma had informed Vikas Dubey about the raid beforehand.

"As per evidence, it has been found that police personnel Vinay Tiwari and KK Sharma had informed Vikas Dubey about the raid beforehand. So, he was on alert and planned to attack police which resulted in the death of 8 policemen," the Kanpur police chief said.

Meanwhile, Dubey was spotted at a hotel in Haryana's Faridabad but gave police the slip. Three persons close to the gangster have been arrested in a joint operation by Uttar Pradesh STF and local crime branch team.

The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the reward for his arrest from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

Vikas Dubey is the main accused in the encounter that took place in Kanpur last week, in which a group of assailants opened fire on a police team, which had gone to arrest him.

Eight police personnel were killed in the encounter. UP Police has launched a manhunt to arrest Dubey but has so far been unsuccessful.

Earlier on Wednesday, Vikas Dubey`s aide Shyamu Bajpai was arrested following a brief encounter. There was a bounty of Rs 25,000 on Bajpai, the police informed. Amar Dubey, a close aide of Dubey, was also gunned down by the state`s Special Task Force today.
