Pakistan PM Imran Khan says PM Narendra Modi wished him on eve of their National Day

Kashmiri separatist leaders stayed away from Pakistan National Day celebrations at the country's High Commission in Delhi amid the government's decision to boycott the annual event by not sending any representative.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said India would not be part of the celebrations.

Later in the day, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted that he received a message from PM Narendra Modi on Friday, the eve of Pakistan Day, extending his greetings. "Received msg from PM Modi: 'I extend my greetings & best wishes to the people of Pakistan on the National Day of Pakistan. It is time that ppl of sub-continent work together for a democratic, peaceful, prosperous region..'," Khan tweeted.

Further, intelligence agencies had alerted the Delhi police that some Hurriyat leaders would be participating as well. "All Hurriyat leaders participatine function could be detained/ arrested to send out a strong message to the separatists," sources said in Delhi Police.

Outside Pakistan High Commission, officials from Indian security establishment were asking visitors about India's stand of boycotting the function. Many after knowning it returned and decided not to attend the function.

"Do you know government of India's stand on this," the government offical ask. And he also says, "We are informing you that the government of india has decided to boycott pakistan national day reception since Hurriyat leaders have been invited as well. We make a sincere request. Now it's your call as per your conscience whether you want to attend or not. While most entered some cars took a detour and sped away."

Meanwhile Mohammad Ahsaan Antoo a Kashmiri human rights activist from Kupwara was detained when he was trying to enter. The security officials told him to sit in the police gypsy. "When I came and showed them the invite, the officials asked me to sit in the gypsy," said Antoo.

Jan-e-Alam, Congress leader and resident of Sadar Bazar who was also coming to attend the invite when told about the govt's stand decided to boycott the event. He says he was coming to spread a message of peace but after being told the government's stand decided to boycott.

Post Pulwama attack in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed, the government has taken stand not to engage with Pakistan till the time they are not stopping sponsoring terrorism in Kashmir. And to the top of it, Pakistan has invited Kashmir separatist leaders against whom there are cases of financing terrorism.

The government has also informed the security forces to keep an eye on the leaders attending Pakistan National Day in Delhi and also to arrest the leaders against whom there are pening terror finance cases registered and were living in hiding.

An Indian minister usually represents the government at the event observed every year on March 23.
