Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said on Sunday that stopping Rahul Gandhi from leading the Congress will only lead to the "extinction" of the grand old party.

No such leader in Congress who can stand up to PM Modi with full might

Veteran Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, in his weekly column on the party mouthpiece 'Saamana', wrote that there is a lack of a leader in the Congress party who can stand firmly against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the national level.

Referring to a letter written by 23 Congress leaders to Sonia Gandhi on having a "full-time" active and "visible" leadership in the party offices, Raut questioned who was preventing these leaders from being active.

Congress still has a chance to come back as a strong national party

"Activeness to stop Rahul Gandhi will be instrumental in destroying the party and lead to its extinction," wrote Sanjay Raut.

The Shiv Sena leader said that it is a good idea for a non-Gandhi to be the Congress president, but none of the aforementioned 23 have that capability. Referring to the regional parties formed by former Congress leaders, Raut further said that Congress still exists all across India but with different masks their original face. "If those masks are thrown away, the party will stand strong as a prominent political party in the country," Raut wrote.

The 'old lady' dilemma: Decision rests on Rahul Gandhi

Sanjay Raut cited a veteran Congress leader, the late V N Gadgil, and said that he had described the Congress as an old lady who will never die. "What should now be done with the old lady? That Rahul Gandhi has to decide," wrote Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

Shiv Sena is currently a part of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in Maharashtra, along with allies Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
