The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has taken over the case of Shajahan VK, an Islamic State (IS) sympathiser from Kerala and who was deported from Turkey in July after a failed attempt to enter Syria, from a Special Cell of Delhi Police on anti-terror. The NIA took over the case last week leaving the Special Cell investigators upset. As most of the terror cases filed under the Special Cell has been taken over by the NIA, the Delhi Police anti-terror unit is left with nabbing dreaded criminals and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) smugglers in the national Capital region. Earlier, the cell had earned accolades of probing various pan-India terror cases.

In July this year, the cell had arrested Shajahan, who was deported from Turkey while allegedly trying to join the Islamic State in Syria. He is now in judicial custody in Delhi.

Shajahan, who had been an activist of the Popular Front of India (PFI) in Kannur, has disclosed to intelligence agencies about the presence of five other PFI activists in Syria. He also revealed that 17 people from Kerala had joined the terror outfir in Syria and Iraq since January 2016.

The cell also found hundreds of telegram IDs of ISIS sympathisers on his mobile phone.

"Shajahan had visited Turkey/Syria for carrying out terrorist activities after procuring an Indian passport in the fake name of Mohammad Ismail Mohideen," a senior NIA officer said. He further added that they have started a probe into the matter and taken over all the documents from the Special Cell.

In February, Shajahan went to Turkey from Chennai using a fake passport. After being deported from there, he made another fake passport in the name of Mohammed Ismail Mohideen. However, the Turkish police busted his move.
