The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to add 37 newer traffic signal points or traffic junctions across the city to streamline vehicular traffic keeping in mind the expanding city limits and increasing number of vehicles on road.

So while the drive from Paldi to Geeta Mandir had a single junction at Paldi cross road (traffic junction); now it will have two additional traffic signals - one at cross road near NID - and the other at Jamalpur cross road if one avoids taking fly over to move towards Geeta Mandir.

Commuters at posh localities like Satellite will also have to apply brakes at Prahaldnagar, near Sachin Tower and at Dada Saheb na Pagla near CEPT as these are some of the areas the AMC has chosen to erect traffic signals.

A senior AMC official said that after inviting suggestions from the Ahmedabad City Traffic Department and following an independent survey - the AMC had decided upon 37 new traffic junctions. The traffic signals include new spots in eastern and western part of the city.

"We have sensor-based traffic signals in the city but sometimes the traffic personnel deployed at various cross roads switch off the signals and manage the traffic manually. So, this time we have decided to go for LED-based microprocessor-controlled traffic signals. These would be operated directly from control room. Moreover, the LED based signals would also help in reducing electricity usage by around 35%," said a senior official in the civic body.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Ahmedabad city, MM Anarwala however says that denizens should be ready to stop at more traffic junctions than the one suggested by AMC. "Currently, there are around 72 traffic signals in the city. Keeping the expanding city limits in mind, the AMC and the Ahmedabad City Traffic is conducting a survey (on Tuesday and Wednesday) to finalise the figures for total traffic signals required in the city. My estimates point to 72 more junctions that Ahmedabad would require in the eastern and western part of the city," said Anarwala.

The AMC official said one traffic signal with LED costs them around Rs6 lakh to Rs7 lakh. He also said the AMC's duty was to erect traffic signals and maintain it - the operation and resourcing of manpower for managing signals would be upon the traffic department.
