India Meteorological Centre issued an orange alert for Mumbai between Wednesday and Friday indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The financial capital of India, Mumbai is receiving one of its heaviest rainfalls this monsoon season. Mumbai has recorded short but intense spells of rain since early Wednesday morning. The city will experience a 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain' today, as per the weather department.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, moderate to heavy rain is very likely in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy rainfalls at a few places on Wednesday.
The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai and nearby areas for July 21. Several parts of Mumbai face waterlogging as the region continues to receive rainfall. There is already an alert till July 22 for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Raigad districts.
The India Meteorological Centre (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert for five Maharashtra districts, including Raigad and Pune, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, for the next two days. It also issued an orange alert for Mumbai between Wednesday and Friday, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Wednesday, IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded 23.9 mm rain, categorised as moderate rainfall and Colaba observatory recorded 8 mm rain, which falls in the light rainfall category.
With torrential rain since the weekend, the city has recorded 1,943.7 mm of rainfall till Tuesday evening, which is 88.11% of the four months' season average rainfall. In July alone, Mumbai recorded 982.4 mm rain, which has exceeded the July average of 827.2 mm.
