JNU to hold fourth annual convocation today, President Ram Nath Kovind invited as chief guest

The JNU release said that the university is largely research-oriented and more number of PhD degrees will help strengthen research and innovation environment.

The prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is all set to hold its fourth annual Convocation today which will focus on conferring PhD degrees.

According to JNU Rector Satish Chandra Garkoti, 600 PhD degrees will be conferred during the convocation.

"Over 600 PhD degrees will be conferred on this day. The number is unprecedented considering the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. This is the third consecutive year that the convocation is being organized which is focused only on conferring the PhD degrees," Rector Satish Chandra Garkoti.

President Ram Nath Kovind will grace the occasion as the chief guest while Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will be the guest of honour.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the function will be organised through video conferencing. The convocation ceremony in the university was reintroduced after a gap of 4 decades. The second and third convocations were held in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Today's convocation will be the third in a row.

"We are glad that in spite of COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuing this tradition of providing our students with an opportunity to cherish their once in a lifetime experience of receiving their PhD degree. This is a proud moment for their parents too to see their ward`s hard work, assiduity and passion for research fructify," said JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar.

The JNU release said that the university is largely research-oriented and more number of PhD degrees will help strengthen research and innovation environment. 

The university was hopeful that establishments of new schools and centres during the last couple of years, like the School of Engineering and Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Special Centre of Disaster Studies, Special Centre for National Security Studies and Special Centre for Study of North East India, the number of PhD degrees will further increase.
