Japan appreciates cooperation extended by India

Japan today expressed "deep appreciation" for the cooperation extended by India in dealing with the after-effects of the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country on March 11.

In a release, the Japanese ministry of foreign affairs said the government has received messages of sympathy and condolences from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and external affairs minister SM Krishna.

"Both of them made offers of assistance from an early stage. Singh stated in his speech at both Houses that India would spare no effort in assisting the Japanese authorities in dealing with the aftermath of this disaster.

"The government of Japan deeply appreciates the cooperation extended by the Government of India," the statement said.

The first batch of relief supplies, which were offered by India, are reaching Narita airport, it said and 25,000 blankets will be transported to various places in several batches.
