The transport department will soon be issuing driving licences in the form of smart cards (like ATM cards). The smart driving licences would be issued to the applicants from January next year.

The new driving licence would be different from the traditional one. It will look like an ATM card. It will include personal details of the applicant impressed on its upper side. The card will also have an inbuilt departmental logo and a micro chip.

The new initiative is aimed at collection & compilation of data of all driving licences across the country. The details of driving offences committed by the applicant would also be entered in the micro chip. Not only the driving licence, the transport department is planning to provide smart registration certificates (RCs) to the new vehicle buyers from the same day. The RCs would also be in the same format and include all the details of the vehicle. The officials of transport department said it would be easy to carry smart card licence and RC. Besides, it would be very useful for transport department in checking the details of persons holding the driving licence or RC.

Presently, smart card licences and RCs are provided to applicants in many states like MP, New Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat etc. “We have done all preparations and would start issuing smart driving licences to applicants from mid January at least at all divisional headquarters. Later, we will implement this at all RTO and DTO offices across the state. The RC in smart card format would also be provided to the new vehicle buyers,” said Pawan Arora, additional transport commissioner.

“It won’t be able for people to make duplicate copy of the smart driving licence and RC because of logo and micro chip impression on it. Presently, people make colour photo copy of the driving licence which causes inconvenience to the traffic police,” he added.

Sources said that the transport department wants to get the scheme inaugurated by the transport minister, a department whose charge is with CM Vasundhara Raje.
