Ragging in educational institutes remain a troubling issue in India, despite several stringent measures.

In yet another horrifying incident, about 30 freshers of IIT Kanpur were subjected to humiliating treatment in name of ragging.

But what can be called as justice done, on Friday, the IIT authorities suspended 22 senior students for 15 days for the incident.

Ironically, it took almost a month for the IIT administration to complete the probe and suspend the guilty.

The incident of ragging took place in August and the Dean Students Welfare and Anti-Ragging Committee  gave its verdict on Friday.

About 30 juniors had lodged a complaint with the institute administration that a group of senior students of Hall 2 in the campus had forced them to do some objectionable and obscene acts during their ragging on August 19 and 20 night.

Freshers who had refused to oblige were thrashed by their seniors.

Junior students had lodged a complaint in this regard with the administration which handed over the case to the Dean Students Welfare and Anti-ragging Committee.

The committee placed its report before the Senate which found seniors guilty of ragging and physical assault.

“We discussed the report and recommendations of the committee during Senate meeting on Thursday and decided to suspend 22 senior students for 15 days,” said Neeraj Kumar, Dean Students’ Welfare, IIT Kanpur.

Kumar said that the suspended students have been directed to file their submissions on charges against them within 15 days.

“The final action against these students will be taken after their replies. If found guilty, they may be terminated from the institute,” said Kumar.

The Dean said that the Institute administration was not taking any legal action or lodging FIRs against these students as it may ruin their careers as well as expose identity of the complainants.
