Hours after farewell, Uttar Pradesh DGP Sulkhan Singh gets 3-month extension

Hours after Uttar Pradesh Police gave a grand sendoff to its chief Sulkhan Singh, the Central government extended his stay as state's top cop for three months.

In a late nigh development, the department of personnel and training (DoPT) after approval from the Union Home ministry, sent a letter informing about the decision.

Interestingly, the 1980 IPS officer is the second DGP in the history of Uttar Pradesh Police after AK Jain who was given extension after retirement.

Singh was made the DGP on April 22 this year. Soon after taking over, he faced a major riot in Shabbirpur village of Saharanpur in which over half a dozen people died in Dalit-Thakur clash and 25 huts of dalits were torched.

But in the last two months, Sukhan Singh shot into limelight when he launched a campaign against hardcore criminals on the directives of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

About 18 criminals were killed in about 450 encounters in which 88 police men sustained gunshot injuries and two officers died. About 870 rewarded criminals were sent behind bars since the campaign.

It was due to this reason, the Chief Minister has sent a proposal seeking three-month extension for Sulkhan Singh.

But the clearance on the proposal from the Centre came on Friday late evening when Sulkhan was already given a sendoff.
