A day after senior Congress leader Narhari Amin alleged that a notorious criminal lodged in Sabarmati jail had hired a sharpshooter to kill Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia, Amraiwadi police on Wednesday arrested Chandrashekhar, a criminal of Amraiwadi from Porbandar.

However, cops pleaded ignorance about Chandrashekhar's designs to murder the Congress leader and clarified that he was nabbed in connection with a case of assault and bootlegging.

Amin, former deputy chief minister of Gujarat, had alleged in a press conference in Ahmedabad on Tuesday that Bhima Dula, a criminal of Porbandar who has been lodged in Sabarmati jail, had hired Chandrashekhar to kill Modhwadia. The GPCC chief is also a native of Porbandar and a sitting MLA from that constituency.

However, Amraiwadi police inspector (PI) Shaktisinh Parmar said that they have no evidence to suggest that Chandrashekhar, 23, was on a mission to kill the state Congress chief. "We have arrested him for his involvement in two separate cases of assault and bootlegging. What we know is that he had gone to Porbandar to meet Bhima Dula' son Lakshamab Dula," the police inspector said.

Chandrashekhar, a resident of Amraiwadi, had allegedly assaulted and injured one Rakesh Tiwari in Gulabnagar area of Amraiwadi on June 21 this year. Later, on July 28, police had seized liquor worth Rs60,000 from Bansilal ni Chali in Amraiwadi area. Police suspect that the liquor consignment belonged to Chandrashekhar. He was wanted by Amraiwadi police in connection with both these cases. On Tuesday, a special team of Amraiwadi police went to Porbandar and nabbed him from there at 11:00pm after being tipped off.

However, police sources said that Chandrashekhar, a native of
Uttar Pradesh had come in contact with and befriended Bhima Dula when he was lodged in Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad a few years back. He was arrested and kept there for his alleged involvement in the Rs55 lakh angadia loot case in Navrangpura three years ago. Cops added that Chandrashekhar has been booked and was arrested in a number of other cases also and is a member of Bhaiji Gang which was behind the angadia loot case.

Police have brought Chandrashekhar to Ahmedabad and further investigation is on.
