Mohammad Sadique of Indian National Congress beat Gulzar Singh Ranike of Shiromani Akali Dal by 83,256 votes. Sadique got 419065 (42.98%) while Ranike got 335809 (34.44%) votes.
The Congress is set to improve its tally in Punjab to eight seats, while the SAD-BJP combine and the Aam Aadmi Party are heading for four and one seats, respectively.
The Congress won in Amritsar, Faridkot, Anandpur Sahib, Jalandhar, Khadoor Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala seats.
The Shiromani Akali Dal, which was looking to resurrect itself in the polls following the backlash over the issue of desecration of religious scriptures, registered victory from Ferozepur and Bathinda seats. While SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal won from Ferozepur, union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal won from Bathinda for the third time.
The BJP took the Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur seats. Actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol beat state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar in Gurdaspur. In Hoshiarpur, BJP candidate and former bureaucrat Som Prakash emerged victorious.
The Aam Aadmi Party appears to be decimated in Punjab as it held only Sangrur seat, where the party's state chief, Bhagwant Mann held on to his seat.
The key contest here was held among SAD's Gulzar Singh Ranike, Congress' Mohammad Sadique, AAP's Professor Sadhu Singh and Nationalist Congress Party's Dr Daljit Singh Chauhan.
Faridkot comprises of nine assembly segments which include Nihal Singhwala, Bhagha Purana, Moga, Dharamkot, Giddarbaha, Faridkot, Kottuekapura, Jaito and Rampura Phul.
AAP once again relied on its sitting MP Sadhu Singh who had defeated SAD's Paramjit Kaur Gulshan of the Shiromani Akali Dal in 2014 by a margin of 1.72 votes. Facing a defeat in the previous election, SAD in 2019 kept hope on Gulzar Singh Ranike.
