Delhi government exempts road tax for battery operated vehicles

The government plans to provide a charging facility for electric vehicles every three kilometres. For this, private sectors will also be encouraged on a large scale.

All owners of battery-powered vehicles in Delhi will no longer have to pay road tax under the new electric vehicle policy. The announcement was made by Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot on Sunday.

The Transport Department issued a notification on Saturday, saying that the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has exempted the tax on all battery-powered electric vehicles with immediate effect.

From October 10, 2020, there will be no road tax for the purchase of electric vehicles. The process of waiving registration fee has also started. However, people's suggestions have been sought in regards to the decision on registration fees.

The Delhi government is working hard and trying all possible ways to make the national capital Delhi pollution-free and promote electric vehicles. Under the Electric Vehicles Policy 2019, a target of 25 percent is set for registering electric vehicles in Delhi by 2024. The government has decided to waive road tax and registration charge along with giving subsidy on the purchase of two, three and four-wheel electric vehicles.

The government plans to provide a charging facility for electric vehicles every three kilometres. For this, private sectors will also be encouraged on a large scale. At least 20 percent of the parking will be provided by changing the building boils.

Apart from this, the government has set a 50 percent target of buying e-buses and put out tenders in this regard. Preparations are also being made to build a charging station for e-buses in entire Delhi.
