The Bombay High Court (HC) on Tuesday granted interim bail, till Wednesday, to Augustine and Grace Pinto, founders of the Ryan International School. A seven-year-old child was found murdered in the school's Gurugram branch last week.

The Pintos had filed a transit, anticipatory bail application, seeking relief till they approached an appropriate court in Haryana. Senior Advocate Niteen Pradhan filed a plea in the court, stating that the incident was most unfortunate but the management could not be held culpable, as sought by the parents of the deceased child. The petition further sought to defend the school's reputation by stating that such an incident had taken place for the first time in the four decades of the institution's existence.

Additional Public Prosecutor Aruna Pai Kamath opposed the plea and sought time to file a detailed reply. Justice Ajey Gadkari allowed the state to file the reply and posted the plea for further hearing on Wednesday. Kamath also asked the court to issue a notice to the Haryana Police, but the court refused to concede.

Pradhan further said the child's death caused deep pain and grief not only to his parents and family but also to trustees, management, staffers, and students of the school. He said the parents moved the court only after reading media reports of protesters seeking the founders' arrest in the case.

Moreover, he said, the CCTV cameras installed in the school premises helped nab the accused.

Meanwhile, a two-member Haryana police team questioned the staffers at Ryan's Kandivli branch for nine hours on Tuesday. Sources confirmed that the group's CEO Ryan Pinto and his mother Grace were present when the police team visited the school.

The team comprised Inspector Anand Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Madan Singh. They approached the Samta Nagar police, who then made arrangements at the school to prevent any untoward situation.

Dr Vinay Rathod, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 12, said: "The Haryana Police informed us about their arrival to the city. We provided adequate number of policemen to accompany them to school."

The child was found in a school toilet, with his throat slit, last Friday. The police have arrested two other persons attached to the school management under various charges of the Juvenile Justice Act.
