Amid ongoing row over violence in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday blamed anti-social elements in vitiating the atmosphere.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a baton-charge by the police in BHU where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent.

An inquiry has been ordered into the violence on the campus.

Speaking to media, Adityanath said, "The administration has been clearly told not to harass any student but get to the bottom of this issue and find details of anti-social elements.

He also said that those involved in spreading anarchy on the campus will not be spared at any cost.

"Those indulging in arson and disorder should be dealt with sternly...all universities in the state have been told to hold dialogue with students (to prevent any such situation elsewhere)," he said.

Meanwhile, amid pressure mounting on office bearers of the University, the chief proctor of the university has resigned, taking moral responsibility for the recent incident.

Following the violence, the district administration declared holidays from Monday till October 2 in all colleges and universities in Varanasi. The BHU had earlier announced that the holidays would start from September 28.

The Congress has demanded a thorough inquiry into the lathi-charge on women students by an all-party parliamentary panel.

The NHRC has issued notice to the UP chief secretary and the director general of police, and the BHU VC, seeking a detailed report in four weeks.
