Pm Narendra Modi met with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, ahead of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, for bilateral talks.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted, "An invaluable strategic partner. PM @narendramodi met with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud on the margins of the #G20. Discussed deepening cooperation in trade & investment, energy security, counter-terrorism, among other areas."

Saudi Arabia is India's top supplier of crude oil but the two countries have expanded their relationship beyond energy, and their governments have agreed to build a strategic partnership.

PM Modi had attended an informal meeting with BRICS' leaders a short while before meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince in which he called the world leaders to mobilise against terrorism, calling it the 'biggest threat to humanity'.

The meeting with Mohammed bin Salman assumes special significance as they have earlier in the past discussed the need to co-operate in cracking down on terror.

The Crown Prince, who is also the Gulf nation's Defence Minister, visited India in February on his first official visit to the country, where he had condemned "in the strongest terms" the February 14 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed by a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group.

India, at that time, strongly raised the issue of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and discussed deepening cooperation in counter-terrorism.

Salman had also pledged an investment of $100 billion in his February visit to India. The investment was to be done in various sectors including energy, infrastructure, and agriculture. The Middle Eastern nation had also ordered the release of 850 Indian prisoners lodged in its jails.

The present bilateral talks, therefore, hold a special significance in the view of earlier talks regarding, trade, counter-terrorism, energy security, and infrastructure.

PM Modi will be attending the G20 visit in Osaka in Japan later in the day.
