Although the senior leader did not have to face the axe as was the buzz in political circles on Saturday night, Shah's powers may not have been so lucky, observers opine. With senior BJP leaders and MLAs asked to monitor the situation, it is likely Shah's powers have been curtailed.
Shah had to face the ire of the disgruntled party workers who were unhappy with selection of candidates from various wards for the elections. The party workers alleged Shah of indulging in nepotism and favouritism for his community. Besides, many workers openly alleged him of making money by selling party tickets to non-BJP people.
Moreover, hundreds of BJP workers also wrote letters to the chief minister and also other senior leaders in the party complaining about Shah.
As a result of these brewing resentment against the seasoned leader, rumours were flying thick and fast on Saturday night that Rakesh Shah has been dismissed from the post of city BJP chief and the chairman of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority Dharmendra Shah has been entrusted with the responsibility.
However, it is believed that the party high command has taken serious note of all the allegations made against the city BJP chief.
The party has also asked senior leaders to monitor the situation and report it to the party high command, said sources close to the development. Gujarat government's spokesman, Jaynarayan Vyas is closely monitoring the situation, while MLAs such as Pradipsinh Jadeja and senior leaders like Dharmendra Shah has been monitoring the situation. Sources also said that Shah has been asked to consult the leaders before taking any major decision.
On the other hand, some insiders believe that its curtains to Shah's role and now it is up to the candidates to ensure their victory.
