Pankaj Udhas, Chitthi Aayi Hai-fame singer, passes away at 72 after prolonged illness

The legendary ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas was known for lending his voice to famous tracks such as Chitthi Aayi Hai, Na Kajre Ki Dhar, and Jiye Toh Jiye Kaise amongst others.

The veteran ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas breathed his last on Monday, February 26, after a prolonged illness. The Padma Shri awardee was 72. His daughter Nayaab Udhas confirmed the news of his demise as she put out a statement from the family on Instagram that read, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness. Udhas Family."

Pankaj Udhas was popular for lending his voice to memorable ghazals in Bollywood such as Chitthi Aayi Hai from the 1986 crime thriller film Naam, Jiye To Jiye Kaise from the 1991 romantic drama Saajan, and Na Kajre Ki Dhar from the 1994 action thriller Mohra amongst others. He also made on-screen appearances in the music video of these tracks in the films.

Born in Gujarat to Keshubhai Udhas and Jituben Udhas in 1951, Pankaj was the youngest of the three brothers. His elder brothers Manhar Udhas and Nirmal Udhas have also sang songs in Hindi films, but they could not match the success and stardom of Pankaj. The ghazal singer released his first album named Aahat in 1980 and went on to release more than 50 albums namely Nasha, Tarrannum, Mehfil, Nayaab, Aafreen, Khayaal, Ghoonghat, Dhadkan, Jashn, and Yaad among others.

Pankaj Udhas was also known for his philanthropic works and supported several charitable causes. The late ghazal and playback singer made huge contribution to associations working towards welfare of cancer patients and thallasemic children through the ticket sales of his concerts. Through his illustrious singing career and humanitarian efforts, Pankaj Udhas will always be remembered as one of the greatest artistes in the cultural history of India.
