South filmmaker and actor Vijaya Nirmala passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 73 in Hyderabad. She was hospitalised in Gachibowli Continental Hospital in Hyderabad and reports have it, the actor suffered from a stroke. Vijaya Nirmala is popularly known for her role in iconic Malayalam horror film, Bhargavi Nilayam released in 1964, in which she played the titular role. The actor also entered Guinness Book of Records in 2002 for being the only female to have directed more than 40 films.

Vijaya is survived by her son Naresh and husband Krishna. Actor Manoj Manchu took to his Twitter page and paid his tribute by tweeting, "You came, Created History where no one can come close to it for the ages to come and now u left us … Will Miss u Nanni, Rest In Peace … Strength to Family , Friend’s ,Welwishers and Fans …#VijayaNirmala Garu Your movies will Remain Forever"

Vijaya Nirmala entered the world of cinema at the age of seven as a child artist with a Tamil movie Machcha Rekhai released in 1950. Then at the age of 11, she debuted in Telugu films with the movie Panduranga Mahatmyam in the year 1957. In 1967, she starred again opposite Prem Nazir in Udhyogastha, by P. Venu after working with him in Bhargavi Nilayam. She debuted in the Telugu industry through the film Rangula Ratnam.

Till date, Vijaya acted in over 200 films with 25 each in Malayalam and Tamil, and the remaining in Telugu.
