Many Indians have the dream of cracking the UPSC exam and becoming an IAS officer, and many UPSC hopefuls strive arduously for years to realize their dream. But in this article, we'll talk about a civil servant who left his job to become an entrepreneur.
Dr Syed Sabahat Azim is a social entrepreneur and a trained doctor who left his position as a 2000-batch IAS officer to start Glocal Healthcare Systems in 2010. He has more than two decades of medical expertise and has training from IIM Ahmedabad in a variety of subjects, including self-help group training, infrastructure, and funding. Additionally, he has held posts up to and including Secretary to the Chief Minister of Tripura.
Dr. Azim's life unexpectedly changed due to a personal tragedy. His father's untimely death at a private hospital during an unneeded procedure generated a strong desire to improve the healthcare system, particularly for the less affluent.
In order to establish Glocal Healthcare Systems (GHS) and give the underserved greater access to high-quality healthcare services, he resigned from his position as an IAS officer.
Dr Azim spends most of his time in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. In a community with a 30-bed health centre, he started the GHS programme. His hospital chain has grown since he opened the first Glocal hospital in Sonamukhi, Bankura, and he now has a presence in a number of West Bengal districts, including Birbhum, Bankura, Murshidabad, Burdwan, Darjeeling, and Nadia.
The World Economic Forum's Schwab Foundation for Social Enterprise honoured Dr. Azim the Social Entrepreneur of 2020 in recognition of his outstanding work in delivering accessible healthcare to people in rural India. He holds that although everyone of us has several identities as humans, none of them are particularly significant. The only important thing is his desire to be recognised for his life's effort.
