2,58,388 valid candidates, just one transgender applicant

The registrations process for DU, that culminated on June 22, saw a total of 3,67,895 registrations on the university's portal, of whom 2,58,388 candidates actually proceeded and made payment.

According to the data, 84,021 female candidates and 68,457 male candidates applied for admission under the unreserved category.

Under the Scheduled Tribe category, 4,044 male applicants and 3,056 female applicants applied for admission. Over 17,000 male candidates and over 16,000 female candidates applied for admission under the SC quota.

As many as 32,926 male candidates and 22,531 female candidates applied for admission under the Other Backward Class (OBC) non-creamy layer quota.

Under the newly-introduced EWS quota, 5,528 male candidates, 3,562 female candidates and one candidate from the third gender applied for admission. This year, the varsity has effected a 10 per cent increase in seats for the EWS category under postgraduate and undergraduate courses. The number of seats for undergraduate courses has increased to 62,000. There will also be separate cut-offs for the EWS category.

Humanities a hit among DU aspirants

Humanities courses have emerged as the most sought after among the students seeking admission in the Delhi University, with BA (Hons) English drawing the maximum number of applications this year.

The BA(Hons) English course saw the maximum number of applications at 1,42,979, followed by BA(Hons) Political Science at 1,30,240 and BA Programme at 1,25,519, as per data available on DU admission website.

The BA (Hons) Economics was the fourth most popular course with 1,24,538 applications.

Changed criteria struck down by HC

The changed criteria for BA(Hons) Economics had come in for criticism from candidates. Till last year, students who had 50% in Mathematics could apply for BA (Hons) in Economics, but this year it had been made mandatory for 'Best of Four', which meant it had to be part of the top four subjects, aggregate of which will be considered for admission.

However, the Delhi High Court had intervened and directed that the varsity follow last year's criteria. The High Court directed Delhi University and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to allow students to apply for admission to undergraduate (UG) courses at the varsity for the current academic session based on the eligibility criteria of 2018-19.

A bench of justices Anu Malhotra and Talwant Singh extended the deadline from June 14 to June 22 for students to apply for the undergraduate courses in DU.
