The first merit list for admissions to degree courses was announced on Tuesday evening, after the announcement was postponed by a day. However, the high cut-offs decided upon by city colleges for admission into specialised courses have left many students disappointed.

“I had scored 75% in my HSC exams and had applied to around five colleges for admission into BCom in Accounts and Finance (BAF), but I haven’t made it to any of the lists,” said Rashi Ubgade, a Thane resident, who will now have to secure admission for a conventional BCom course while she waits for the second merit list which will be announced on June 13.

While the cut-off for the BAF course was 89% at KC College, it was 93.50% at Jai Hind College. The other courses which saw a cut-off between 80-90% were also self-financing, specialised courses like BCom in Banking and Insurance (BBI), Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and BCom in Financial Markets (BFM).

As compared to last year, the BMS cut-off for science students at NM College rose by approximately 4% to 90.40%, while the BAF cut-off increased to 94.33% from last year’s 87.5%.

Colleges feel the cut-offs for these courses continue to remain high as students pick professional courses over the conventional BA, BCom or BSc courses. “The cut-offs for BSc will drop when students withdraw after their they have secured admission into engineering or medical colleges,” said Dr Bharat Bhushan Sharma, principal of VG Vaze College in Mulund.

The cut-offs are also expected to drop in the second list due to the fact that students apply to multiple colleges and hence, the first list has the top scorers featuring simultaneously in the lists of various colleges. “The cut-offs are a little on the higher side as compared to last year, but they will drop in the second list like every year,” confirmed Dr Harsha Mehta, principal of SIES College, Sion.
