MCD school raid: Saws and hammers found in classroom

In a surprise conducted raid by Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, at a school in Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi, classrooms were found to be ‘rented’ out by the school guard and the premises being used to cook food among other things. Two people were apprehended for illegally occupying the place as was later tweeted by Sisodia in a series of tweets.

According to a senior official, the raid was conducted following complaints by parents, after which Sisodia was informed. The raid was conducted at around 10 pm, in which hand tools including hammers and saws were found in the classrooms which were used to cook food, Sisodia tweeted.

“Playing with the safety of children in schools will not be tolerated at any cost,” he tweeted. 

According to Sisodia, the security guard at the school said he had rented out the classroom at night to earn extra money because he worked 24 hours a day but was paid only eight hours’ wages.

Further investigation revealed that the two would check in after school hours and move out before the school opened for the day. At the time of the raid, the duo were found cooking dinner inside the classroom.

The school is in Kalyanpuri locality and is run by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. Primary schools in the city are run by its civic bodies, while the government controls education for Class 6 and above.

“We assure the parents that action will be taken soon. The guard will be suspended. We have also asked the school principal to give an explanation,” said Anil Kumar, assistant director of education at East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
