A week after a major disaster was averted as Ranchi Rajdhani derailed at new Delhi railway station, on Thursday Jammu Tavi Express, with hundreds on board, that was arriving at the New Delhi Railway station, derailed few meters ahead of the platform on Thursday morning. Senior officers said, none of the passengers sustained serious injuries but the railway traffic was hit as a number of trains had to be rerouted, terminated or diverted. Poor maintenance of tracks was prima facie stated to be the reason behind the incident.

The incident took place around 9 am when the train was signalled to enter platform number 15 of the New Delhi Railway station. As it approached the station, the last coach slipped off the tracks and the train came to a sudden halt. Since the train was moving at a very slow speed not many of the passengers felt the jolt.

Senior officers from the Northern Railways told DNA, that prima facie it was established that the incident was a result of poor maintenance of tracks. "Senior officers visited the site along with technical experts and it was noticed that the incident took place due to problems in track. Regular measurements, observations, maintenance are required for the tracks and irregularities have been found in the process. The department is yet to zero down on those who would be responsible and adequate action would be taken, followed by a detailed probe into the incident," the officer said.

Divisional Railway Manager, RN Singh along with other senior railway officers inspected the site and an enquiry has been initiated.

In another incident of last Thursday, one person was injured and railway traffic through the capital was badly hit. "Due to this accident, at least 9 trains had to be diverted while other 9 were cancelled. Three other trains were delayed while one had its route cut short," the officer said. As a result, several passengers at various railway stations in Delhi were left stranded. Officers said that adequate arrangements had to be made for crowd control and to normalise the situation.

This is the fourth incident in this month of train derailment. Earlier in the day, seven coaches of the Howrah-Jabalpur Shaktipunj Express derailed near Fafrakund railway station in Sonbhadra, 80 kilometres from Varanasi. Fortunately, no one was injured.
