A day after the Delhi University wrapped up the election process for this year’s student union panel, the alleged “dummy” candidate Raja Choudhary, who contested for the presidential post independently, continued to remain the topic of discussion at the University campus on Thursday.

Choudhary, whose name was confused with RSS-backed ABVP’s presidential candidate Rajat Choudhary was allegedly harassed by ABVP members and supporters during the entire election process. Raja had scored 3,480 votes, while Rajat had got 14,709 votes.

The ABVP claimed that he had taken away crucial votes of their presidential candidat1e alleging the involvement of Congress-backed National Student Union of India (NSUI) behind his candidature. “I would not have gotten even a single vote had I been a dummy candidate,” Raja said.

However, Raja, a first-year law student who presented himself as an “apolitical” has a different story to tell. Aiming to protect student “democracy” at the campus, he completely followed the Lyngdoh committee guidelines and wrapped up his campaign within the limit of Rs 5,000 as laid down in the rules.

“All the political student groups have shamelessly violated the Lygdoh committee guidelines during the DUSU polls. I wanted to prove that elections can also be fought on the lines of these guidelines,” he said. Claiming that his life is in “danger” after contesting in the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) election, Raja said, “I have been receiving life threats from ABVP members. They are frustrated after losing the presidential post. They never wanted me to contest in the polls.”

Last week, he had filed a police complaint against Rajat after he allegedly thrashed him. However, no action has been taken against him as of now.

Following his complaint, Raja was provided with police protection until Wednesday. “Now, when the elections are over and the police protection given to me has been withdrawn, who will take the responsibility of my security?” he asked.

The ABVP, however, denied all allegations.“He was a dummy candidate who had taken away around 3000 votes of our Presidential candidate by misleading voters. The pamphlets of his name printed with ABVP’s logo were distributed that had created further confusion among students,” said ABVP’s national media convenor Saket Bahuguna.
