The play on the fifth day finally started after a delay of one hour due to a light drizzle which started 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the play. New Zealand's most experienced batting duo of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were extremely cautious in conditions that were hard for batting and they had t grind out the first hour.
New Zealand scored just 16 runs in the first hours and remained unscathed as they patiently waited for the bad balls to come and skipper Williamson especially took his own sweet time. Jasprit Bumrah uncharacteristically looked a bit off and didn't look like taking a wicket.
Thus, the introduction of Mohammed Shami brought a lot of expectations and it bore fruit instantly. Shami was breathing fire and on every ball, he bowled, he looked like taking a wicket and his hard work and persistence paid off as he induced a false shot from Ross Taylor, who was getting itchy to get things going.
A fuller ball and Taylor derived it through the covers, however, he didn't keep it on the ground and Shubman Gill at the position took a stunning grab and also save the ball from hitting a pigeon. Gill almost flew like a bird to give India their third wicket.
