Former President Pranab Mukherjee, aged 84, died on Monday evening, his son Abhijit Mukherjee said in a tweet. 

Pranab Mukherjee was admitted at the Army Research and Referral Hospital for the past 21 days and been critical following brain surgery. The veteran Congress leader was admitted to the hospital at 12.07 PM on August 10 in a critical condition.

Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted: "With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers ,duas and prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You."

Following the news of the demise, sports stars have come forward to extend their condolences on the passing away of Pranab Mukherjee.

Former Indian cricketers Virendra Sehwag and VVS Laxman expressed their 'heartfelt' condolences. Sehwag wrote, "My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Shri #PranabMukherjee . Om Shanti"

Laxman took to Twitter and shared a photo captioning it, "My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of our former President, Shri #PranabMukherjee . May his soul attain sadgati."

Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal too mourned the death of Pranab Mukherjee. She wrote, "Extremely saddened to hear about the demise of Former President & Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee".

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju also shared an image and wrote, "I'm extremely saddened by the demise of former President of India, Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee. He had been a guiding light for all of us. His contributions to the nation will be cherished forever. May God give the strength to the family members. May his soul rest in peace".

Team India's official Olympic Twitter handle wrote, "The Indian Olympic Association grieves the passing away of former President of India and Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. Our prayers and sympathies are with his family, loved ones and the nation. RIP #PranabMukherjee".

Shuttler Jwala Gutta wrote it is an end of an era. "End of an era....#PranabMukherjee RIP".

Boxer Vijender Singh wrote, "Former President #PranabMukherjee will be remembered as a tall and multidimensional figure of Indian politics. A statesman, thinker, writer and people's man. Deepest Condolences To The Family".

"His demise is passing of an era," the office of President Ram Nath Kovind said in a tweet. Pranab Mukherjee was a veteran politician who served as foreign and finance minister in previous administrations.
