The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released an official statement on the coronavirus situation in IPL 2020. The statement has confirmed that two players are coronavirus positive and since they are asymptomatic, they have been isolated. The statement from the BCCI read, “Upon landing in the UAE, all the participants have followed a mandatory testing and quarantine programme. Total of 1,988 RT-PCR COVID tests were carried out between August 20th – 28th across all participant groups in the UAE. These groups include Players, Support Staff, Team Management, BCCI Staff, IPL Operational team, Hotel and ground transport Staff. 13 personnel have tested positive of which 2 are players. All the affected personnel as well as their close contacts are asymptomatic and have been isolated from other team members. They are being monitored by the IPL Medical Team.”

It has been widely reported that Chennai Super Kings’ Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad were tested positive for the coronavirus. The entire CSK squad, including support staff and officials, underwent their fourth COVID-19 test on Friday. The results of the latest tests will come out on Saturday. They further added that no support staff member has tested positive and only a member of social media team and two net bowlers have returned positive. An official statement is likely to be released by CSK shortly.

Preparation thrown out of gear

It remains to be seen whether Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad can play any more part in IPL 2020. With Suresh Raina also pulling out due to personal reasons, it will be interesting to see whether BCCI allows a replacement for the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

With the 13th edition of the IPL just less than a month away, teams are gearing up to prepare for the tournament which will be held in the UAE in a bio-secure environment.

In Abu Dhabi, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders began their practice sessions after being in quarantine for close to six days. Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have also started training as they were the earliest to come to the UAE. However, the situation in Chennai Super Kings is proving to be worrisome and it will take a lot of effort to ensure the tournament goes through without any more COVID mishaps.
