The country’s largest private sector power generator, Tata Power Co Ltd on Friday said it has 75,000 retail consumers in its Mumbai licence area, as against 26,000 in November.

The company’s consumer base was at 56,000 as on March 31.
Tata Power’s licence area for distribution of electricity in Mumbai overlaps with the areas to which electricity is supplied by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport.

Tata Power’s main business has been electricity generation and bulk supply to the Mumbai metropolitan area, which is regulated by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Following the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld Tata Power’s licence to distribute power to retail customers in the Mumbai licence area, the company has chalked out a plan to spend Rs 300 crore per year on distribution business in the area. The company is currently in a legal feud with the Maharashtra government, which has asked the power utility to continue supplying 360 mw to Reliance Infrastructure Ltd.
