Speaking to a local newspaper, Antigua PM Gaston Browne has confirmed Mehul Choksi's citizenship will be revoked. Choksi along with Nirav Modi is the main accused in the Rs 11, 400 crore PNB scam.

Browne said that Choksi's Antigua and Barbuda citizenship will be revoked soon.  “His citizenship was processed; he got through but the reality is his citizenship will be revoked and he will be repatriated to India; so there is recourse. It’s not a case that we are trying to provide any safe harbour for criminals, for those who are involved in financial crimes,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

“We have to allow for due process. He has a matter before the court and as we said to the Indian Government, criminals have fundamental rights, too, and Choksi has a right to go to court and defend his position. But I can assure you, after he has exhausted all of his legal options, he will be extradited.”

Reacting to the development, Indian sources have said, " India waits for Antigua's internal process of revoking citizenship.Only after that extradition process can start separately. India continues to engage with Antigua.MEA yet to hear officially from Antiguan govt about revoking of citizenship".

The Bombay High Court Monday sought a sealed report from an expert team of doctors at the state-run J J Hospital on the medical condition of diamantaire Mehul Choksi and if he was in a position to travel. Choksi, accused of money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam, is presently in Antigua and has told the high court that he is unable to travel to India due to ill health.

Choksi has claimed that he left India in January 2018 to undergo a bypass surgery and not to avoid prosecution. In an affidavit filed in the HC, he said he would return to India if he is medically fit. The government has got lot of flak of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi managing to leave India. Nirav Modi is currently in London jail and despite repeated pleas he hasn't got bail. It will be a big success for the government if they do managed to get Mehul Choksi back to India.
