In lead-up to Lok Sabha Elections 2019, Bollywood celebrities have been urging people to use their franchise. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted out to the biggest names in the Indian film fraternity, requesting them to push for citizens' participation in the electoral process, Alia Bhatt had acceded by saying, "A vote is a nation’s voice. A nation’s choice. Use your voice. Make your choice. #Vote #Election2019"

However, turns out the 'Raazi' star wouldn't herself be exercising her power. In an interview with India Today, Alia Bhatt, who was present along with Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur as a part of promotions of their upcoming film Kalank, was asked about how they were going to do their bit to elect the new government. To which, Varun, Sonakshi and Aditya combinedly said, "By voting."

Varun said, "I think we all will be voting and it's important. In Maharashtra, there's still some time for election to begin for us to go vote. We all will be going and voting and doing our duty and electing the government officials we feel fit to come into power."

When the interviewer specifically asked Alia if she was also going to vote, the actress replied, "I can't vote." When Sonakshi asked, "Why, passport?", Alia nodded.

Apparently, Alia doesn't hold an Indian passport as she and her mother Soni Razdan are both British citizens. Since India doesn't allow anyone to hold dual citizenship, Alia will be allowed to cast her vote only when she gives up her British citizenship, which surprisingly she still hasn't.

Before the last general elections in 2014, Alia Bhatt had told Hindustan Times, “Unfortunately, I can’t vote because I have a British passport. I am past the date (to get the official documents for voting) this time around, but I will try and get my voting card the next time."

Alia is not the only Bollywood star who won't be stepping out to cast her vote, this election. Akshay Kumar, who has featured in maximum patriotic films, also can't vote in India as he holds a Canadian passport. Deepika Padukone also holds a Danish passport.
