Yelahanka is listed No 1 in the 198 wards of the BBMP because it is old and its ruler Kempegowda made Bengaluru possible.

And when it was ranked 10th in the 28 most liveable localities of Bangalore in the DNA-AZ market survey, leaders of Yelahanka were happy because the place made a leap from the 17th position last year to the 10th.

But many residents are not buoyed with the findings.

“I am happy that Yelahanka has been placed 10th among the best localities in the survey,” says MLA SR Vishwanath.

“Many people called to congratulate me for Yelahanka’s economic and social growth and rising popularity. But Yelahanka has some problems such as lack of underground drainage and erratic water supply. But we have improved the amenities. It’s a nice place to live in and we are set to make Yelahanka beautiful with 52 parks in the new town,” says he.

He is working on a Rs19-crore project at the old town. There is a huge chunk of land which will be made into a splendid lake and tourist spot.

While leaders like Viswanath are happy and zealous about Yelahanka, residents are a bit worried.

“I’m surprised to see that we got 10th rank,” says homemaker Malini. “I’ve been residing in Yelahanka since 1994 and we’ve been facing water problem all along. Now rentals have gone up several ladders up. Many new offices and educational institutions are attracting more people to this place pushing up the demand for more amenities.

“I thought Yelahanka will be placed very low in the survey rankings. But it got a better position maybe because of its  proximity to the international airport and many commercial projects in the vicinity,” says Malini.

Another resident Vineetha is equally surprised. “I don’t agree with this survey finding. How come this place  jumped to the 10th position. The only good thing about Yelahanka is that it is less polluted. But for everything, I’ve to go to Hebbal or to the city,” says she.

Traders, families, visitors, all seem to nurture a suspicion that Yelahanka’s new-found status is owing to its proximity to the international airport. This is because Yelahanka has to do a lot in providing civic amenities at a satisfactory level.

“I’m happy Yelahanka stands 10th in position, thanks mainly to the airport. But we face problems due to the government’s failure in bringing in Cauvery water. But it is a nice place to live in,” says Muniraju, a resident.
