With the state-run medical colleges not meeting the Medical Council of India's (MCI) new guidelines for implementation of 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota, the state government on Monday will write to MCI with a proposal to increase 200 seats.

Of the 27 medical colleges in Gujarat, including BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, Medical college, Baroda, MP Shah Government Medical college, Jamnagar, Pandit Deendayal Medical College, Rajkot and Surat Municipal Medical College, five state run colleges are run by the state government, and they all have 250 seats.

With over 200 seats each Gujarat has the highest number of government run colleges among all states across the country.

A meeting regarding the same was held between deans and government officials. Sources said, "We will be writing to the MCI on Monday to increase 200 seats so that the students are benefitted. There are nearly 4,650 seats for medical courses and to implement 10 per cent EWS reservation quota, the increase has to be 25 per cent of current intake."

Usually, each medical college has 150 MBBS seats. As per the Central government, each medical college will add 35 new seats to accommodate EWS quota applicants. Since the state does not intent to disturb existing quota for SC, ST and OBCs, 35 new seats will be added in each of these colleges, taking the total number of seats to 185 in each medical college. Of these new 35 seats, 15 will be reserved for EWS category and the rest will be distributed among existing categories.
