A case of theft was lodged with the Navrangpura police station on Tuesday after Rs 11 lakh worth of gold ornaments was stolen by an employee of a jewellery shop. The incident had taken place on February 14, 2019, in the Latkarwala Jewellery shop located in CG Road area. The complaint was lodged by victim Hitesh Soni (48), a resident of Satellite area and owner of the shop. It is to be noted that although an application on the matter was made by Soni to cops the very day after the theft, the complaint was lodged only now, on June 25.

Soni owns five shops in the supermall located in CG Road area and also runs a wholesale jewellery shop. As per his complaint, on February 13, he had given 345 grams of gold to one of his workers identified as Satya Narayan Das (28), a resident of Danilimda, to make an ornament.

As per company rules, the transaction was noted in a diary. After the work was done, Das put the gold inside the locker and went home. Next day, he took the ornament again as the finishing work was left and started working on it. In the evening, he left for home.

On February 15, when Das didn't show up for work, Soni tried contacting him but his phones were switched off. After calling him several times, when there was no response, Soni got suspicious and checked the locker. He discovered that the gold ornament which Das had been working on was missing. While going through CCTV footage from the shop, he saw that on February 14, Das hadn't put the gold back in the locker and had left the shop with it.

Inspector PB Desai of Navrangpura police station said, "After the application was made, we started investigating the matter, but were not able to track the accused down. As the investigation was on, we didn't lodge a complaint in the matter earlier."
