ENG 221/10 (44.4)
Match over
0.2 : 0.2: C Woakes to A Finch, FOUR! Just over! A fortunate boundary for Australia to get off the mark! Woakes bowls it slightly fuller and this one swings away. Finch goes hard at it, there is extra bounce though and the ball goes off the outside edge over the outstretched hand of Root at second slip and into the fence.
1.1 : 1.1: J Archer to A Finch, FOUR! A half volley and it has been put away! Very full to begin with outside off, Finch leans into it and strokes it through covers for a boundary.
3.6 : 3.6: J Archer to D Warner, FOUR! Goes short and it is easy for Warner. Not sure why Archer changed the length there. He bowls it halfway down the track. Warner spots it early and pulls it through square leg for a boundary. That is not the right length at the moment, especially with the ball doing as much as it is.
4.2 : 4.2: C Woakes to A Finch, FOUR! Easy pickings! Once again this is too short, it sits up to be hit. Finch rocks back and hammers it through mid-wicket for a boundary. Woakes will be disappointed with the length he just bowled there but Finch will want more of those.
6.3 : 6.3: C Woakes to D Warner, FOUR! That is the risk you take by pitching it full to Warner. This is fuller and on off, Warner just chips it over mid off and bags a boundary.
9.2 : 9.2: J Archer to D Warner, FOUR! Short and wide and put away! Outside off, Warner pounces on the width offered. He slaps it through cover-point and it races away.
11.2: M Wood to A Finch, FOUR! Nice shot. On a length on leg, Finch flicks it towards fine leg for a boundary.
12.1 : 12.1: C Woakes to A Finch, FOUR! Not off the middle but a boundary! Fuller and outside off, Finch looks to drive but it goes off the inner half past mid on for a boundary.
12.5 : 12.5: C Woakes to A Finch, FOUR! Punched down the ground for a boundary! Second in the over! Full and on off, Finch lofts it over mid off and bags another boundary.
13.1 : 13.1: M Wood to D Warner, FOUR! Up and over! Slightly short around off and Warner picks the length early. He pulls it over the mid on fielder and bags a boundary. Runs starting to come now for Australia.
13.3 : 13.3: M Wood to A Finch, FOUR! Too short again and this is pulled again. This time wide of mid on and it races away. England are leaking boundaries at the moment.
15.1 : 15.1: M Wood to A Finch, FOUR! Excellent shot. Short on middle, Finch pulls it through square leg for a boundary.
15.5 : 15.5: M Wood to A Finch, FOUR! Second boundary of the over. Poor bowling from Mark Wood. Easy pickings for Aaron Finch. Full and outside off, Finch drives it beautifully through covers for a boundary.
17.3 : 17.3: A Rashid to D Warner, FOUR! A hit-me ball! Short and on middle, Warner goes back and pulls it through square leg. Bairstow in the deep runs to his left, dives but fails to stop it. England have just not bowled with the same control after Powerplay 1!
17.5 : 17.5: A Rashid to D Warner, FOUR! Through the off side this time! 100 up for Australia. Too full now from Rashid and outside off, Warner strokes it wide of mid off and bags a boundary. Second of the over.
22.2 : 22.2: M Ali to A Finch, SIX! Clears the longer part of the ground with ease! This is floated on middle, Finch hits it with the spin and clears the mid-wicket fence with some ease. First of the game.
22.4 : 22.4: M Ali to D Warner, OUT! In the air... taken! Moeen Ali gets the wicket England so desperately needed! The crowd has finally found its voice back. The extra bounce does the trick for Ali. This is flatter and around off, Warner goes back and initially looks to cut but the ball takes off. Warner is surprised by it. He looks to bail out of the shot but it is too late. The ball hits the top part of the bat and balloons to point where Root takes a catch moving to his left. A big stand comes to a
24.6 : 24.6: M Ali to A Finch, SIX! Moeen Ali tosses this up, tempts Finch to take on him. Aaron obliges, he lofts it over the long on fence for a biggie. Spoils the over completely.
26.6: M Ali to A Finch, EDGY FOUR! This is floated outside off, Finch looks to drive inside the line, it goes off the outside edge and down to the third man fence. Once again, Ali's last ball spoils the over.
27.2 : 27.2: A Rashid to U Khawaja, FOUR! Adding salt to the wound! Khawaja could have been dismissed on the last ball but instead bags a boundary on the next. Brings the reverse sweep out and hits it through cover-point for a boundary.
31.5 : 31.5: A Rashid to A Finch, FOUR! Into the 90s with that boundary! Rashid gives it even more air but bowls it outside off. Finch eases it through the gap in the cover region. No fielder in the deep and it races away. 50-run stand between Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja.
32.2 : 32.2: Ben Stokes to U Khawaja, OUT! KABOOM! That is right through Khawaja! He is completely beaten for pace here! The stumping chance has not cost Australia a lot. Stokes spears this full at 145 KPH on middle, it tails back in just a little. Khawaja is late in his flick shot and the ball sneaks through and hits the middle stump. A budding partnership comes to an end. England need to keep picking wickets if they need to stem the run-flow.
35.3 : 35.3: J Archer to A Finch, OUT! In the air... taken! 100 and out for Finch! He is fuming with himself. Just as he would have thought of stepping on the gas, he has been dismissed. The short ball does the trick. It is on middle, Finch looks to pull but does not get on top of the bounce. It takes the top edge and goes towards fine leg where Woakes takes a well-judged catch. England fighting back here, they have not only managed to pull back the run rate but also now got the centurion.
35.4 : 35.4: J Archer to S Smith, FOUR! Too easy for Smith! Down the leg side, Smith works it through fine leg and the ball races away.
36.5 : 36.5: M Wood to S Smith, FOUR! Too full and put away! On middle, Smith leans into it and strokes it through mid on. You need not run for those. Wood hasn't had a good day with the ball today.
36.6 : 36.6: M Wood to S Smith, FOUR! Deft! What a shot to bring up 200! Slightly shorter and outside off, Smith plays it late and it races to the third man fence. Two boundaries to end the over. Another expensive one from Wood.
37.2 : 37.2: J Archer to G Maxwell, SIX! Outrageous! What a shot this is! It is a length ball outside off, Maxwell stands tall and whips it over the mid-wicket fence.
37.3 : 37.3: J Archer to G Maxwell, FOUR! Maxwell is in the mood here! This is on a length and around off once again. Maxwell stands tall and plays the similar shot he did on the last ball. This time it is not off the middle and a boundary results.
38.2 : 38.2: M Wood to G Maxwell, OUT! Caught behind! Wood gets the Big Show! A tiny show from the Big Show! Poor, poor shot. A very soft dismissal. It is short and outside off, Maxwell looks to upper cut it but it goes off the bottom part and into the hands of Buttler. A much-needed wicket for Wood. He was struggling till now but this could well get him back to his best.
40.2: M Wood to M Stoinis, FOUR! Shorter side and it races away! Full and outside off, Stoinis hits it through covers. The fielder runs to his right and dives but fails to stop it.
41.4 : 41.4: A Rashid to S Smith, FOUR! Too short and Smith won't miss out. This is a real freebie. It is a drag down. Smith goes back and pulls it over the mid-wicket fielder and a boundary results.
41.5 : 41.5: A Rashid to S Smith, OUT! Stoinis can continue running to the pavilion! A horrible mix-up and this is probably the last thing Australia wanted. Also, he seems to have a bad chemistry with Smith as he was run out in the practice game against England too and he has been run out again. Rashid tosses it up outside off, Smith creams it through wide mid off. Bairstow from long off runs to his left, collects the ball. The batsmen complete one by then. Now Stoinis wants another and he rushes off.
43.6 : 43.6: C Woakes to S Smith, FOUR! Spoils the over! A much-needed boundary for Australia. Slightly short and Smith picks the length early. He goes back and pulls it through mid-wicket and the ball races away.
45.4 : 45.4: C Woakes to S Smith, OUT! Smith holes out! He whacks the bat down onto the ground as he walks off. It seems like he wanted to hit it a lot squarer than he did. A slower one by Woakes on middle. Smith looks to loft it over mid-wicket but ends up hitting it too straight. It goes towards long on where Archer takes a good catch falling forward. England are into the bowling all-rounders now. 300 looks difficult.
46.1 : 46.1: M Wood to A Carey, FOUR! Lovely shot! The key there was that he played that late! Full and outside off, Carey waits for it and guides it through point for a boundary. Ideal start to the over, they need to make it count.
47.1: C Woakes to Pat Cummins, OUT! Caught behind! Another one bites the dust! Australia have completely lost their way! This is on a length and around off, Cummins looks to push at it but does so inside the line. The ball goes off the outside edge and low towards Buttler who takes it with a dive across.
48.1: J Archer to A Carey, FOUR! Glorious shot! A welcome boundary for Australia. It is the slower one outside off, Carey just lofts it over covers, beats the man in the deep and a boundary. 5 from the first two balls. Can Australia make this a huge over?
48.6 : 48.6: J Archer to A Carey, FOUR! Clever, clever batting! A boundary to start the over and one to end it! 11 from it. Short and outside off, Carey upper cuts it fine on the off side and a boundary results.
49.4 : 49.4: Ben Stokes to A Carey, FOUR! Up and over! Poor ball with mid off up. Full and outside off, Carey lofts it over extra cover and bags a boundary. Two balls to go, Australia would love another two.
49.6 : 49.6: Ben Stokes to A Carey, FOUR! A boundary to end the innings! 11 from the last over! This is short and outside off, Carey stands tall and slaps it through coves. It is away from the sweeper and a handy boundary. AUSTRALIA END WITH 285!
0.2 : 0.2: J Behrendorff to J Vince, OUT! BOOM! Behrendorff knocks Vince over! What a start for Australia and what a delivery by Jason. Another failure for Vince and once again the opening stand for England fails to contribute anything significant. JB runs in and bowls this right up there. It starts from off and swings back in late. Vince fails to adjust to the movement. The ball hits the pads and then deflects onto the stumps. A duck for Vince. Dream start on his comeback game for Behrendorff.
0.6 : 0.6: J Behrendorff to Joe Root, FOUR! Off the mark in style are England and Root. This is once again outside off but the length is shorter. Root goes back and cuts it past the diving point fielder and bags a boundary. A four to end but a top class first over by Jason.
1.5 : 1.5: M Starc to Joe Root, FOUR! Two boundaries in two balls for Root! Too easy this, on the pads, Root works it fine on the leg side and bags a boundary. This is not a good follow-up over by Starc till now.
2.4 : 2.4: J Behrendorff to J Bairstow, FOUR! Lovely clip! This is a little too straight by Jason Behrendorff. Bairstow flicks it through mid-wicket and the ball races away. The outfield is pretty fast here.
3.3 : 3.3: M Starc to Joe Root, OUT! LBW! That is plumb in front! Australia have another one here! England in big, big trouble! Both the opening bowlers have one each. Starc steams in and bowls this fuller and outside off, this one comes back in late. Root plants his front foot across and then tries to flick but misses and the ball hits him on the pads. An appeal and Root walks off. He does not even think of a review as he knew he is a goner. 271 more needed.
4.5 : 4.5: J Behrendorff to E Morgan, FOUR! What a shot! This is the new England! They are two down but are still looking to attack. Morgan dances down the track and makes it into a half-volley. He smashes it through mid off and the ball races away to the fence.
5.2 : 5.2: M Starc to J Bairstow, FOUR! Need not run for those! Very delightful shot. Full and outside off, Bairstow extends his arms and creams it through cover for a boundary.
5.5 : 5.5: M Starc to E Morgan, OUT! Number 3 is down! Australia are all over England at the moment. The full ball gets Root and the short one gets the England skipper. It is on the body. Morgan looks to pull but the ball goes off the top edge towards fine leg where Cummins takes one running to his left and then falls over. That got big onto Morgan. Pin-drop silence in the stadium here.
6.5: J Behrendorff to J Bairstow, FOUR! Just over mid off! Bairstow would have surely had his heart in his mouth! This is on a length and around off, Bairstow looks to hit it on the up. It goes off the higher portion of the bat and over mid off for a boundary.
8.3 : 8.3: J Behrendorff to J Bairstow, FOUR! Punched away! Slightly shorter and outside off, Bairstow pushes it in the gap in the cover region and the ball races away to the fence.
9.4 : 9.4: Pat Cummins to J Bairstow, FOUR! Too straight and Bairstow puts it away! This is also fuller and on the pads, Jonny clips it through mid-wicket and bags a boundary. First runs of Cummins' bowling.
10.3 : 10.3: J Behrendorff to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Stokes is off the mark after 11 dots. Jeez but that is some way to get off the mark. Length ball outside off, Stokes comes down the track and smashes is through covers for a boundary.
13.5 : 13.5: J Behrendorff to J Bairstow, OUT! In the air... taken! Jonny Bairstow has thrown it away! The change of ends works wonders for Jason Behrendorff! It is short and outside off, Jonny looks to drag his pull but his one hand comes off the handle. It takes the top edge and goes high up in the air towards the fielder in the deep at mid-wicket. Cummins once again makes no mistake. England slip further. Another 233 runs needed in 217 balls.
15.1 : 15.1: M Starc to Jos Buttler, FOUR! Exquisite! Lovely timing on this one! Fuller and on off, no swing at all. Buttler leans forward and strokes it through covers for a boundary. First boundary for Buttler.
18.4 : 18.4: Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes, FOUR! That has gone to the fence like a tracer bullet! Stokes dances down the track and Cummins bangs it short. Stokes powers it through mid-wicket and the ball races away to the fence.
19.3 : 19.3: M Stoinis to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Stokes is on the charge here! He comes down the track and makes into a full ball. He lofts it over mid on for a boundary. England may just decide to take on Stoinis as he is the weak link in this Australian bowling line-up. Runs needed below 200.
22.2 : 22.2: N Lyon to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Nice shot. Flighted delivery on middle, Stokes sweeps it through mid-wicket for a boundary. 100 up for England.
24.1 : 24.1: N Lyon to Ben Stokes, LEADING EDGE BUT FOUR! This is tossed up on middle, it holds onto the wicket. Stokes closes the face of the bat early, it goes off the leading edge above the bowler's hand and through mid on for a boundary. A fortunate boundary but England won't care how they come as long as they come.
25.6 : 25.6: M Stoinis to Jos Buttler, FOUR! Bludgeoned! That is some hit! Buttler takes a few steps down the track and converts it into a full ball. He hammers it past long on and bags a boundary. The last ball spoils the over. Not for the first time today. 8 from it. 169 needed in 144.
27.2 : 27.2: M Stoinis to Jos Buttler, OUT! What a catch that is! Stoinis gets the big fish! The England fans have their heads down. They can't believe what just happened! The stand which probably was getting Australia a little worried has been cut short. This is on the pads, Buttler whips it hard but flat towards deep square leg. Khawaja there runs to his right and hangs onto it. It was traveling, it could have easily bursts through his hands. The Australians are elated. England need another 162.
30.1 : 30.1: G Maxwell to Ben Stokes, SIX! Releases a little pressure! A hit-me ball! Short and on the body, Stokes has enough time to go back and pull it hard over the square leg fence for a huge one.
30.3 : 30.3: G Maxwell to Ben Stokes, SIX! Another one! This time it is flat! This is angled into the batter. Stokes goes down on one knee and sweeps it powerfully and over the mid-wicket fence.
33.2 : 33.2: Pat Cummins to C Woakes, FOUR! A welcome boundary for England! England would hope this gets Woakes going. Fuller and on the pads, Woakes works it through wide long on for a boundary. 150 up for England.
33.6 : 33.6: Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Second boundary in the over! Gets it past the diving mid on fielder! Short and on middle, Stokes pulls it, it is not off the middle but beats Warner at mid off and it races away to the fence. 9 runs from the over. A good one for England. They would like a few more like these.
35.1 : 35.1: Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes, FOUR! Hit hard, short square boundaries and a boundary! Stokes dances down the track and also makes room. Cummins bangs it short. Stokes slaps it through cover-point and it races away. The over starts with a boundary. Ideal start.
35.3 : 35.3: Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes, FOUR! To the left of extra cover! Three balls and two boundaries in the over! Stokes once again uses his feet and makes room again. Cummins bowls this slightly fuller and this is powered past the diving cover fielder for a boundary.
35.6 : 35.6: Pat Cummins to C Woakes, FOUR! Woakes gets into the act now! Third boundary in the over and a huge one. 13 from it. Does this over change the momentum? Short and around off, Woakes drags it through mid-wicket and it races away. 113 needed in 84 balls now.
36.6: M Starc to Ben Stokes, OUT! BOWLED 'EM! Starc does what Starc does best! Knocks the stumps over. Sends Stokes back to the pavilion 11 short of a ton. Stokes may have also taken back the hopes of this England side of chasing this down. Something special was needed to get rid of Stokes and Starc bowls a corker of a yorker. It tails back in from outside off. It is at 145 KPH. Stokes fails to get his bat down in time and the off pole is hit. Starc is pumped up. A brilliant innings by Stokes co
39.2 : 39.2: J Behrendorff to M Ali, FOUR! First boundary for Moeen Ali and England will hope it is just the start! Length and outside off, Moeen just lofts it over covers, shorter side that and it is a boundary. Runs needed below 100 now.
39.3 : 39.3: J Behrendorff to M Ali, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Moeen Ali is out of here! Jason Behrendorff has the last laugh! Excellent delivery this. It is on a length and around off, holds its line after pitching. Moeen looks to put bat on ball but ends up playing inside the line. The ball kisses the outside edge and goes to the keeper. Into the bowling all-rounders now are Australia. Seems an impossible task for England now. 97 needed in 63.
40.3: N Lyon to A Rashid, SIX! Rashid says the game is not over yet! What a shot! Uses his feet and gets to the pitch of it, lofts it over the long on fence for a biggie. For a second Starc must have felt he had a chance but it clears him.
41.3: J Behrendorff to C Woakes, OUT! Another excellent catch! Excellent team work I should say between Maxwell and Finch! Jason Behrendorff gets his fourth. The slower one on middle, Woakes shuffles across and looks to clear the mid-wicket fence. It is the longer part of the ground. Maxwell in the deep runs to his right, keeps one eye on the ropes and takes it. He then realizes that the momentum is taking him over the ropes so he lobs it to Finch who runs to his right from long on. Woakes, Engl
41.4 : 41.4: J Behrendorff to A Rashid, FOUR! Just over! Rashid is continuing to fight. This is on the pads, Rashid flicks it over the short fine leg fielder and bags a boundary.
43.3 : 43.3: J Behrendorff to J Archer, OUT! Fifer for Jason Behrendorff! What a performance by him. He was picked in the side for this game after being dropped for the last and bowls a match winning spell. He goes fuller and on off, JA looks to go over long off. Does not get under the delivery and hits it flat to long off where Warner makes no mistake. He has three more balls to take a 6-fer.
44.1 : 44.1: M Starc to A Rashid, FOUR! Top edge and a boundary! Short and on middle, Rashid looks to pull but gets a top edge over the keeper's head for a boundary.
44.2 : 44.2: M Starc to A Rashid, FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries! This is right off the middle. Fuller and on off, this is hit over covers. Past the diving fielder in the deep and a boundary results.
44.4 : 44.4: M Starc to A Rashid, OUT! Straight to covers! Starc gets the last man! His 4th wicket today. He goes full and around off, Rashid looks to hit it over covers but ends up hitting it flat to Stoinis over there. He makes no mistake. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 64 RUNS!
