0.0 : Hello everyone and welcome to the coverage of the Boxing Day Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth. The home side are coming off an impressive series Down Under where they beat Australia 2-1. It is what led to the change of captaincy for the Proteas with Faf du Plessis being appointed as the full-time Test captain. He led his troops well and against an inexperienced Sri Lankan side, the Saffas will hope for another impressive set of performances.
Things aren't that doom and gloom for Sri Lanka though, they beat Australia at home recently which does not happen that often and it was the way the youngsters stepped up which should bolster the confidence of the captain Angelo Mathews who is himself returning from injury. He will want to lead from the front and ensure that Sri Lanka are not just competing but also winning games. Yes the home side start as favorites but do not rule out the Lankans since they are never short of a fight. Stay tun

End of an absorbing day of Test cricket! Both teams fought well and were up for the challenge. Sri Lanka started in an unconvincing manner but soon got back on track. While South Africa lost the plot after getting a solid opening platform.
The South African top half batsmen scored runs in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s but none lasted long to convert it into a big innings. As a result, the day ends with Sri Lanka being the happier side. After the kind of start that the hosts got after electing to bat, it appeared that the Lankans will be in for a tough day but they showed tremendous fighting spirit to bounce back.
Suranga Lakmal was an absolute star. He provided them with the initial breakthrough and also hunted down a couple of wickets in the evening. Rangana Herath also bowled tidily but apart from them the rest were not up to standard. Skipper Angelo Mathews did the holding up job well but that's not what you need on the first day of a Test match.
It's been an even start to this Test match but Sri Lanka would feel that they fared better than expected and would like to take it forward. Quinton de Kock holds the key for the Proteas from here on and his innings can prove to be the differential factor. South Africa would hope that the tail wags with him tomorrow and it takes the first innings total close to 350 at least. Do join us for day 2 action at 1330 IST. Cheers!!
...Day 2, First session...
We're back folks with all the action of the second day of the first Test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at the St George's Park, Port Elizabeth. Led by an inspirational bowling performance by Suranga Lakmal, Sri Lanka bounced back yesterday and will be motivated to do even better today. South Africa's plan on the other hand would be to try and bat as long as possible and frustrate the Lankans. Promises to be an exciting couple of hours of the morning session. Stay tuned, the action isn
Once again it's clear blue skies and the sun is out in its full glory. The players are now taking the field. Quinton de Kock and Vernon Philander are the overnight batsmen. Nuwan Pradeep to begin proceedings. Two slips in place along with a gully. Here we go...

90.4 : N Pradeep to Philander, That's better. That is where he needs to be. Bowls it full and angling in around off, it straightens a touch after landing, Philander gets behind the line and blocks it to the off side.
90.5 : N Pradeep to Philander, Hurls it closer to the off stump line, on a length and holding its line, Vernon allows it through to the keeper. Which ball to play, which one to leave is an important decision and Philander so far has done it nicely.

92.2 : N Pradeep to Kock, On a length and angling across, it lands on off and de Kock goes back to defend it towards the bowler.
92.3 : N Pradeep to Kock, Short and wide outside off, de Kock cuts it through point for a single.
The wind is blowing from right to left from this end. The bowler will have to make necessary adjustment to use it to his advantage.
92.4 : N Pradeep to Philander, Pradeep digs in a short ball and it goes over the head of Philander. One for the over signals the square leg umpire.
92.5 : Pradeep to V Philander, DROPPED! Pradeep hurries up the batsman with a short ball around the rib cage, Philander tries pulling it over square leg but ends up gloving it behind. 93.5 : S Lakmal to Kock, Fuller in length and outside off, de Kock lunges and softly pushes it with an angled bat to gully.
93.6 : S Lakmal to Kock, Good delivery, drops it on a length outside off and gets it to move back in a long way. De Kock once again shuffles across to cover his stumps and then leaves it. It wasn't very far from the off stump.
94.1 : N Pradeep to V Philander, Slants in a fuller length ball on middle, straightening a bit, Philander plays it off his pads and pushes it to mid on.
94.2 : N Pradeep to Philander, Oohhh...that missed the off stump by a whisker. Pradeep dishes out a good length ball on off and it shapes back in a shade, Philander decides to leave it alone and it goes perilously past the off stump. Heart in mouth stuff!
94.3 : N Pradeep to Philander, Philander has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
94.4 : N Pradeep to Philander, OUT! Philander has been bounced out! It was a ploy by Pradeep which he used in his last over as well but without any success. But this time it has reaped rich dividends. Bangs in a short ball with a fielder in the deep on the leg side. Philander takes the challenge of pulling it across the line but fails to control the extra bounce. It takes the top edge and Chameera in the deep mid-wicket region grabs a diving catch. First success for Sri Lanka this morning.

95.3 : S Lakmal to Maharaj, OUT! MAIDEN TEST FIFER FOR LAKMAL! Beautiful bowling and well deserved. Bowls a nice outswinger around off, on a fuller length, Maharaj pushes at it tentatively from the crease and nicks it behind. Chandimal dives to his right to complete a good catch. South Africa are going down quickly.
Kyle Abbott is in next.
95.4 : S Lakmal to Abbott, The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
95.5 : S Lakmal to Abbott, On a good length and around off, moving away a shade, Abbott pushes at it from the crease and misses.

96.1 : N Pradeep to de Kock, FOUR! With wickets falling at the other end, de Kock's approach will be quite clear. He receives room outside off and drills it through covers for a boundary. Expect many more of those now from him!
96.2 : N Pradeep to Abbott, OUT! Terrible mix-up and Abbott is run out! Short and wide outside off, de Kock hangs back and slaps it through point for a single. He turns for the second run as well and Abbott responds. But Quinton stutters after seeing the fielder firing in the throw and sends his partner back. 98.5 : N Pradeep to Kock, OUT! Timberrr!! Pradeep spears in a terrific inswinging yorker, de Kock tries to dig it out but is beaten for movement and pace. The ball sneaks through before his bat comes down and goes on to destroy the stumps. SOUTH AFRICA ALL OUT FOR 286!
Outstanding bowling show by Sri Lanka! They continued from where they left yesterday and picked the remaining four wickets in 53 balls by conceding just 19 runs. Nuwan Pradeep picked up a couple of wickets while Suranga Lakmal added one to his overnight tally and grabbed his first fifer in Tests.
Sri Lanka will be buoyed with their overall performance so far in this Test. After a 104-run opening stand, the signs were ominous for the Lankans but they showed a lot of character by bouncing back and bundling out the hosts inside the 300-run mark. South Africa will be disappointed with their batsmen as plenty of them got starts but failed to convert.
Now, it's over to Sri Lanka's batting. It's going to be a big challenge for them on this pitch which has some juice for the fast bowlers. The trio of Kyle Abbott, Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander will be a real threat and the visitors will have to apply themselves in order to succeed. Stay tuned for their reply.
