Morne Morkel strides out to the middle.
B Kumar to A Phehlukwayo, Ends the over brilliantly! Just five from the last over and a single to end it. A full toss on middle, Phehlukwayo hits it down to long on for a run. SOUTH AFRICA END WITH 269 FOR 8!
A mixed feeling for both sides. South Africa will feel that 269 is a terrific score on a slow pitch but then that last over from Bhuvneshwar - just 5 runs from it - could be the talking point if this match goes down the wire.
In terms of the average score on this ground and the results favouring the side batting first and a slow pitch, 269 looks a pretty decent score. Hashim Amla departed cheaply but the 53-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis set the platform. However, once de Kock was dismissed, the middle order lost its way, till the skipper found an able partner in Chris Morris.
Finishing off things - one which India have struggled with for ages. They had the Proteas on the mat at 134/5 in the 28th over with Killer Miller gone - but Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo added 130 runs for the next 2 wickets in 129 balls - which helped the hosts get to a competitive total. India were not at their best on the field, missing a few run outs and even a catch of Faf. The captain's century might just give his side an edge on a sluggish deck.
India will be disappointed with the way they finished overall. They could have bowled out the Proteas for under 200 but they conceded way too many runs by their own standard. Even the highly reliable Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah were ordinary while once again, the spinners brought the visitors back into the game. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal had combined figures of 20-0-79-5 which pegged the hosts back.
Kuldeep Yadav is giving an interview by the sidelines. Says that it feels good to be playing international cricket after a one-month break. Adds that the wicket is good to bat on, initially being a bit slow and there is some turn for the spinners. Says that he enjoyed bowling on the surface, just varying his lengths and pace. On being asked about the degree of turn available, Kuldeep says that there was a little bit of turn. On being asked about the score, don't know whether it is confidence or

6.3 : M Morkel to R Sharma, OUT! There comes the first breakthrough! Morne provides it. A nothing shot from Rohit. The ball is on a length outside off and the batsman just looks to go over the top without bothering to move his feet. Big mistake. He has survived a couple of close calls so far, with the edges missing the stumps. But third time he is not so lucky. The ball goes off the leading edge and is miles in the air. Quinton de Kock - my word - that is some catch. Calls clearly and loudly - an

Dhawan moves to 20 from 15 balls and this is his fourth boundary.

Indifferent start from Chris Morris - 10 from his opening over. Dhawan has moved to 30 from 25 balls with 5 fours.
Early introduction of spin. Normally Faf du Plessis likes to bring this guy a little bit later than this. Here is Imran Tahir.

11.5 : I Tahir to V Kohli, Outside off, placed wide of cover for one more.
11.6 : I Tahir to S Dhawan, Lucky to get away with that. A rank bad ball, short and outside off, the attempted googly, Shikhar pulls it with disdain but finds the only man in the ring on the leg side - Faf du Plessis at short mid-wicket. The Protea skipper cannot control his laughter. That was a boundary for the taking.
12.1 : C Morris to V Kohli, Outside off, on a length, steered to short third man for a single.
12.2 : C Morris to S Dhawan, OUT! LBW shout, turned down. But South Africa still get a wicket! Superb fielding. A length ball outside off, Dhawan swings wildly across the line and misses, getting hit on the pads. Morris starts to appeal but then bails out, recognizing the inside edge. But then, out of nowhere, Virat Kohli is halfway down the pitch for the single. Poor Dhawan has no idea and is suddenly seeing his skipper haring towards him when the southpaw is busy searching for the ball. No opti

14.1 : C Morris to V Kohli, Full and outside off, watchfully defended.

14.3 : C Morris to V Kohli, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
14.4 : C Morris to V Kohli, A short ball outside off, Kohli gets on top of the bounce and pulls it through mid-wicket. That should have been just a single but Morris fumbles at the bowler's end and concedes an overthrow.
KingVish - You should never throw your wickets away in such matches. You never know - rain could come in any time and the you might lose out on Duckworth-Lewis method just because of a wicket down around the break. @KingVish - Hmmm... really thoughtful, though I believe one should never throw his wicket away.
14.5 : C Morris to V Kohli, Brilliant running. Virat pushes at this away from his body and gets it through the covers for another brace. The throw comes in to Morris again and this time he collects it but ouch, gets a blow on his thumb. That looks nasty.

Phehlukwayo starts to shout but then bails out. Not quite sure why the Proteas did not go for the review. That looked pretty adjacent. Waiting for the Hawk Eye.
15.5 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, WIDE. Slips this down the leg side, Rahane misses his pull.
A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
15.6 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Down the leg side, tucked towards square leg for a run.
DRINKS BREAK. India looking pretty comfortable at the moment. Chasing a required run rate of 5.4, they are going at 5 runs an over, without much fuss. Both wickets gone down have been due to poor cricket from the batsmen - Rohit just throwing it away without moving his feet while Dhawan, unfortunate to be run out by his skipper. The South African opening bowlers did threaten to pick a wicket or two but since the backup bowlers have come on, there has not been any potential danger.

16.3 : C Morris to V Kohli, Outside off, tapped through point for a run.
16.4 : C Morris to A Rahane, Super shot. Full and straight, Jinx drives it straight back to where it came from, past the stumps at the other end. Morne Morkel chases it down from mid off and slides near the ropes to pull the ball back in. Rahane wants the third for that effort, is more than halfway down the track but is sent back.
16.5 : C Morris to A Rahane, Good awareness and Rahane might have been out! Oh dear... not expected from Rahane at least. Full and outside off, Ajinkya drives it straight back once again and this time, Morris picks the ball up in his followthrough and has a shy at the striker's end. Misses. He has his hands on his head and replays show why. Rahane actually tried to get his left foot in first and then got the bat in. Neither did the foot come in nor the bat, when the throw was fired.
16.6 : C Morris to A Rahane, WIDE. A meaningless bouncer, way over the head, left alone. The umpire stretches his arms.
C Morris to A Rahane, The batsman gets up on his toes to play that one.

18.3 : C Morris to V Kohli, FOUR! Far from ideal in any format of the game. Miles down the leg side, Kohli just puts his bat to it and the ball goes off the edgy portion to the fine leg fence. The stand is worth 30 from 38 balls.
18.4 : C Morris to V Kohli, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
18.5 : C Morris to V Kohli, That stays horribly low, Virat just about brings his bat down in time and gets a thick bottom edge. A second late and it would have been Kohli LBW.
18.6 : C Morris to V Kohli, FOUR! What a shot. A length ball outside off, Kohli punches this down the ground, seemingly for a single but Morne Morkel is too late to get around and that will be a boundary! 100 UP FOR INDIA, 169 more needed from 186 balls.

DRINKS BREAK. Another chase, the master presents a case. 269 is not a bad score on this track but the Indians are making it look like a stroll in the park. This is not the best bowling attack in the world but it is not an attack which can pick only 2 wickets, that too, in its home conditions. The bowling is looking ordinary and Faf du Plessis needs some inspiration to turn this around. As far as India are concerned, they would be pretty confident about this. Hardly broke a sweat.

37.6 : I Tahir to A Rahane, Pushes this through mid on for one. 150-RUN STAND IS UP.
38.1 : C Morris to A Rahane, Short and outside off, cut away through point for a couple.
38.2 : C Morris to A Rahane, On a length outside off, nips back in, Rahane looks to tuck but misses and is hit on the pads. The ball goes towards point and the batsmen take a single. Leg bye signalled.
38.3 : C Morris to V Kohli, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. The batsmen have run through for a single.
38.4 : C Morris to A Rahane, Full on middle, pushed towards mid on.
38.5 : C Morris to A Rahane, SIX! THRASH! A length ball outside off, Rahane just swings it cleanly over long on! The stand is worth 160 from 160 balls!
38.6 : C Morris to A Rahane, WIDE. Slips out of the hand, goes down the leg side, Jinx misses his flick.
C Morris to A Rahane, FOUR! Easy peasy. Waits for the short ball, arches his back and guides it over the keeper to the third man fence. 15 from the over. 38 more needed from 66 balls now.
39.1 : I Tahir to V Kohli, Full and outside off, Kohli reaches out and has a hack, only to miss and get a thick inside edge to the leg side.
39.2 : I Tahir to V Kohli, Outside off, steered straight to short third man.
39.3 : I Tahir to V Kohli, Driven through mid on by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single.

39.5 : I Tahir to V Kohli, The batsman has played it to the point region. They pick up a single.
39.6 : I Tahir to A Rahane, Flicks this through the leg side for a run. 10-0-51-0 are the figures for Imran Tahir. Totally nullified tonight.
POWERPLAY 3 time. Does it matter? 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. This match is almost like 5 matches left in the series for SA.
Andile Phehlukwayo comes back on for some bowling practice or some batting hits for the batsmen.
40.1 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Outside off, punched through mid on for a single.
40.2 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, FOUR! Aerial but safe. Full and wide outside off, Kohli reaches out and slices it over point for a boundary! Moves to 95...
40.3 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, Pushes this down to long on for a run.
40.4 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Banged in short, pulled through mid-wicket for one.
40.5 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, FOUR! ODI 100 NUMBER 33! 67 short? Another brilliant knock. Gets there in style too, reaching out to a half volley and driving it through the covers. His reaction makes it seem that he wanted this badly - scoring a hundred in the first match of the series and setting the tone. He roars. And more often than not, when he roars, the opposition cows.
40.6 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, A short ball, pulled through mid-wicket for a single. 12 from the over.
Kagiso Rabada is back on. For how long?
41.1 : K Rabada to V Kohli, A length ball around off, defended to the leg side.
41.2 : K Rabada to V Kohli, FOUR! A net session is going on. A young fast bowler comes on to bowl, someone who has troubled Kohli in the Tests. And the Indian skipper treats him like a rookie. Just lofts a length ball over cover for a boundary. 250 UP FOR INDIA. Almost there...
41.3 : K Rabada to V Kohli, The batsman has played it towards mid-wicket.
41.4 : K Rabada to V Kohli, Works it through mid-wicket for a run.
41.5 : K Rabada to A Rahane, Outside off, dabbed to third man for a single.
41.6 : K Rabada to V Kohli, Down the leg side, flicked through mid-wicket for a couple. The throw comes at the non-striker's end but Rabada is the last bit interested, standing in the middle of the pitch, apparently too bored to move a muscle. Quinton de Kock runs at the stumps at the keeper's end, shouts, 'KG! KG!' indicating him to go to the stumps but the look on the bowler's face says it all - What is the point? South Africa look demolished.
42.1 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Full and outside off, Rahane chips it down the ground but Hashim Amla races across to his right and makes a decent stop.
42.2 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Excellent yorker, dug out back to the bowler.
42.3 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, Full on middle, flicked through mid-wicket where the fielder makes a good diving stop.
42.4 : A Phehlukwayo to A Rahane, OUT! No double century stand, no 8-wicket win. South Africa have picked up a wicket more because Rahane has got bored of net practice. A length ball on middle, Rahane looks to go over the top but there is no timing on that. The ball goes off the inner half of the bat towards long on where Imran Tahir takes it calmly. What a partnership. Worth 189. Just 14 more needed.
Hardik Pandya walks in at number 5 for the finishing duties.
42.5 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, The batsman gets a bottom edge of the bat on that one.
42.6 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, 1 run.

43.2 : K Rabada to V Kohli, The batsman has punched that ball through the off side.

43.4 : K Rabada to H Pandya, Walks across his stumps and flicks it towards fine leg for a single.
43.5 : K Rabada to V Kohli, Let's play football! What an effort. Kohli pulls this through fine leg where Tabraiz Shamsi, the substitute, runs to his left, slides and then kicks the ball away towards deep mid-wicket! A single taken.
43.6 : K Rabada to H Pandya, Full and outside off, Hardik gets across and defends.
44.1 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, A short ball outside off, pull-slapped through mid-wicket for a single.
0.0 : Oh wow. A review at this time of the game.
44.2 : A Phehlukwayo to H Pandya, Ridiculous review. Pandya had walked across his stumps and missed a straight delivery, a full toss, getting pinged on the pads. Phehlukwayo asked the question, only to be ignored. He convinced the stand-in skipper, Amla to go for the review, who decides to waste some time. Impact is umpire's call, hitting not even one of the three stumps. A single taken in the meanwhile.
44.3 : A Phehlukwayo to V Kohli, OUT! Kohli falls. After a valiant century. A short ball outside off, Kohli looks to pull but mistimes it miles in the air. Kagiso Rabada runs across to his left from fine leg and takes it comfortably. Kohli cannot take his team home but his side is nearly home. End of another magnificent innings.
MS Dhoni walks out now, officially the finisher.
44.4 : A Phehlukwayo to H Pandya, That ball has struck the batsman on the thigh pad. They manage to come back for the second. Leg byes given by the umpire.
44.5 : A Phehlukwayo to H Pandya, Full and outside off, pushed towards mid off for a single.
44.6 : A Phehlukwayo to MS Dhoni, Huge LBW shout, nothing in it. Full and straight, Dhoni misses his flick and is hit on the pads. Amla thinks this would have been worth a review but Hawk Eye shows it to be missing leg.
45.1 : K Rabada to H Pandya, Outside off, pushed to the off side for a quick single.
45.2 : K Rabada to MS Dhoni, A full toss outside off, pushed back to the bowler.
45.3 : K Rabada to MS Dhoni, FOUR! India go 1-0 up. In some style. Dominated South Africa at a venue where the Indians have not won a single ODI before tonight. A short ball around off, Dhoni swivels and pulls it through square leg. No one bothers to chase. Everyone wants this done and dusted with. Let us shake hands. VICTORY BY 6 WICKETS AND 27 BALLS TO SPARE!
Two fabulous knocks, one team goes on to win. Faf du Plessis' century lifted South Africa to 269. At the halfway stage, it seemed competitive. But halfway through the run chase, it just seemed like a respectable total defending which, the Proteas could try and pick some wickets.
Really seems like an India-Sri Lanka ODI match all over once again. Pitch looked subcontinental, yet India found ways of losing two quick wickets. Then, the 189-run stand between Kohli and Rahane sealed the deal. South Africa have a lot of questions to answer in their quest for Mission WC 2019 and this is definitely not their best step.
Agreed, it is just the first match but once the new balls got older, the Proteas simply struggled to keep the Indians quiet. Singles were conceded easily and it was not till the 30th over when Rahane and Kohli actually decided to try and finish the game by the 40th over that the visitors pressed on the charge button. To win by 6 wickets, that too, with a proper batsman short, in a foreign venue, just goes to show the volumes of confidence, this team is in. Time for the presentation...
South African skipper, Faf du Plessis says that he went to the dressing room during the run chase not to HIDE, but because he wanted to check his finger. On his back, he says he is fine, not a worry. Blames the poor batting by his side for the loss. Praises India for their bowling but sternly tells that the Proteas were 60-70 runs short because India have a very good batting lineup. Is happy of the stands with Morris and Phehlukwayo but still, laments the batting effort in general. On the bowlin
Victorious Indian captain, Virat Kohli says that the first game of a series is very important and the team wanted to bring the confidence from Johannesburg (the third Test where India won). Adds that when they restricted South Africa to 270, they realized that they are in with a chance. Feels sorry for Dhawan but nice for Rahane as he sealed the number 4 spot. Agrees that chasing is fun, as it suits his game style more. On his century celebration, he smiles and says that he had not scored a cent
Right! Not quite the number 1 vs number 2 contest one would have hoped for. India have played like Kings in Kingsmead, blowing South Africa away. Will more of this follow in the second ODI? We head over to Centurion for the lone day game in this ODI series - at 1000 local (0800 GMT). That will be played on Sunday, 4th February, 2018. Do join us then. There will be a couple of other matches before that game but the one currently ongoing is the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test series where it is difficul
