Kings XI Punjab vs Rising Pune Supergiants Live Commentary, 10th T20, Indian Premier League 2016, April 17, 2016

RPS 152/7 (20)
Punjab won by 6 wickets
KXIP 153/4 (18.4)
Match over
6.0 :

Pune have reached 49 in 6 overs, including two boundaries off the last over. Spin is not working for Punjab so far. Axar Patel has been hammered and the same goes for Pardeep Sahu. Maybe this warmup helped. Incredibly, this is Pune's lowest score at 6 overs in IPL 2016 so far.

Gone. KP is gone after another start. KP needs some big runs. Desperately. A few fifties and a hundred this IPL. But he's finished this innings with over 1000 runs in IPL.

2.1 :

Big attempted slog by Rahane over wide mid on brings about his downfall. He gets an inside edge onto his stumps. A very uncharacteristic shot. The commentators were praising him to the moon a while ago but he never looked comfortable today.

Faf du Plessis kept the strike off the last ball off the previous over, now Mohit Sharma bowls a slower ball and Faf gets a top edge that Mohit Sharma catches. 149/5 now, Faf really slowed down after a good initial start. How much can Dhoni get in the last 5 balls?

0.2 :

Sandeep Sharma is getting some really good swing to begin with against Rahane. But then Rahane gets a slightly fuller ball and drives it for four like the technical genius he is.

Faf du Plessis has really slowed down after reaching say, 30. He brings up 50 in 42 balls. Pune Supergiants need to get a move on. Steve Smith could be their man. 180 looked on the cards at one point. Now they might take 160.

OUT. Mohit Sharma had taken NO wickets in the IPL so far, and now he takes 3. Low full toss, and Dhoni hit it to Glenn Maxwell in the deep as if he was giving catching practice.

7.3 :

The second cheeky scoop behind the wicket by F du Plessis. These are some very interesting shots, and for now Pune Supergiants are on top. But Gavaskar's talking about dentists for some reason.

11.4 :

Thisara Perera was out after hitting just one boundary. RPS are now 87/3 and the early advantage they got has been lost. It's even stevens now. Faf du Plessis though is still going strong.

Steven Smith is in.

Three boundaries in 4 balls for Steve Smith. 3.2 overs remain. Just how many can Pune Supergiants get? 32 will get them to 160.

Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga is out of the IPL while Rangana Herath is retiring.

8.5 :

It seems I should have been softer on Kevin Pietersen. For this reason.

Faf du Plessis is struggling with the heat, and Steve Smith has holed out trying to go for broke. But people are interested in Mohit Sharma, who's just taken a wicket.

3.6 :

Three boundaries from Axar Patel's over. The first two were hit by Kevin Pietersen and the third by Faf du Plessis. He's been bowling too full and it's not turning as much. They have been hitting him over or past mid on consistently.

Here's something you can enjoy alongside the match.

Huge Dhoni chants as he walks in. The commentators call him the 'Roger Federer of Cricket - everyone loves him' and 'Selfless - Could have promoted himself'. Ugh.

Irfan Pathan is run out off the last ball. Just THREE RUNS and THREE WICKETS from Mohit Sharma's 20th over. That could be very, very crucial in the end. Pune Supergiants finished on a maeagre 152/7. 76/2 in the first 10 overs and then 76/5 in the next 10. KXIP will feel they can finally get a win.

Join us back in a short while for the coverage of Punjab run chase
End of over: RPS 152/7 (Pathan 2, R Ashwin 1)
2.0 :

13 runs were hit off the second over. Ankit is not Ishant though both have the last names Sharma. He's certainly not Mohit Sharma. Give Ishant 10 overs, he'll finish KXIP.

Hardly any difference between KXIP and RPSG at the end of six overs. RPS were 49/1 and Kings XI are 50/0. But this is where Pune began to lose the plot.

KXIP are 71/0 at the 10-over mark. They need 82 more, so the match looks to be even, but without taking wickets Pune cannot win.

6 runs from the 16th over courtesy some untidy efforts in the field, otherwise it could have been just 4. 35 needed off 24. M Ashwin will bowl. Why not Pathan? Pathan has bowled exactly one over. Dhoni seems to be showing off his dislike??

14.1 :

OUT. Shaun Marsh misses a straight ball and is dismissed for 4.

Interesting comparison. At 14.1 overs, Rising Pune Supergiants are 103/2, while Kings XI were 101/3. This match could still go any way.

50 runs are needed from 35 balls at over 8.5 per over. Not as easy as you like anymore.

12.2 :

Manan Vohra reached 50 in just 31 balls. His team now needs 57 off 48. Easy as you like. Then he was out swishing across the line. There was no need for that kind of batting at this stage.

GONE. Ashwin gets Miller. Anyone named Ashwin seems to be lucky these days. Miller holes out at long on. Needless big hit. The match has turned.

22 runs off the last 25 balls and 2 wickets.

10.3 :

Three boundaries off the first three balls of the 11th over. Manan Vohra is on fire.

This is the reason KXIP may not be winning.

0.4 :

Ishant Sharma is thundering in. Well not exactly, but he bowled three dot balls and then Murali Vijay was unable to hit him for six.

Did we just say anyone named Ashwin is getting lucky? First Murugan, now Ravichandran. Four, six. The match is getting over very quickly courtesy Maxwell - and the two Ashwins.

Yorker, hit to point and a quick single is pinched. The fielder hits the top of the non striker's stumps for no better reason than he wants to, and concedes an overthrow.

18.3

Kings XI have finally won a match, but they have made heavy weather of what should have been an easy chase after a 97-run opening stand. RPSG came back with 4 wickets in 25 balls, but Maxwell finally showed his magic by smashing 32 off 14 balls to take the Kings home.

2.6 :

SIX. Can you believe it, that is the first SIX of the match. Have you ever heard of an IPL innings without a six? Oh, maybe a few have happened. But Ishant has lost his glory and shown his true colours.

Three consecutive boundaries from Manan Vohra sets the score straight. 43 from 5 overs. KXIP are right on track.

Quickgun Murugan Ashwin has proved his mettle again with the dismissal of Murali Vijay. This is a critical wicket. The significance is slightly dented by the fact that the previous ball was hit for six. But they still need 41 from 30. Two tight overs and a wicket or so here will turn the match on its head.

CRASH, BANG. And just like that, in 2 balls the match is almost over. Maxwell makes the maximum of balls 5 and 6, hitting them for six and four. Murugan has lost his glory within two balls, after becoming the leading wicket taker in IPL 9 as well. This is what T20 does to you.

Dhoni needs to try some of this again.
