IND 392/4 (50)
India beat Sri Lanka by 141 runs
SL 251/8 (50)
Match over
0.0 : It was the Suranga Lakmal show in Dharamsala as India's top and middle order was blown away in the first 90 minutes. The hosts were 29/7 at one stage and would have been bowled out for their lowest ever ODI score had it not been for some resistance from MS Dhoni and Kuldeep Yadav. Will that be a lesson well learnt by the Indians or will Sri Lanka get momentum from that game? Hello and a warm welcome to the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali.
WEATHER - Slightly different conditions to that in Dharamsala. It is pretty hazy, not exactly overcast but the sun is not out as yet. The climate is pleasant though and playing should be nice. The floodlights have already been switched on.
Pitch report - Sunil Gavaskar doing the pitch report says there will be movement for the first hour or so. The surface is damp which means that there will be moisture. Does not think the cracks will open up because of the hazy weather. Also, does not feel the sun will come out for long, so nothing much for the spinners to expect.
TOSS - It is time for the captains' call. Rohit Sharma spins the coin, Thisara Perera calls Heads and Heads it is. SRI LANKA CHOOSE TO BOWL!
THISARA PERERA says that he wants to use the overcast conditions and hence the decision to field. Is happy with the result in the previous game and feels that the toss won the match there. Feels that this looks a better wicket than the Dharamsala one and should be good for batting. Does not want to look too much into the fact that they reached late yesterday and could not get enough time to settle. Is happy with the one net practice they had this morning and says that the boys are ready and rari
ROHIT SHARMA says he would have bowled first too, looking at the conditions. He opines that the wicket looks sticky and the Indian batsmen just need to change their mindset while approaching batting. Feels that India are a young batting group and need to learn from the mistakes committed in the first game and not repeat them today. Agrees that it is indeed tempting to bring in Ajinkya Rahane but the team management does not want to change his batting position by bringing him in and playing him i
It is time for the national anthems. The Sri Lankan one first up, which will be followed by the hosts' one.
We are done with the national anthems. The players are out in the middle. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are the openers for the Indian side. Interestingly, it will be Angelo Mathews bowling first up to Rohit Sharma. Here we go...
0.1 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Lazy from Rohit. A length ball outside off, Rohit has a needless waft without moving his feet and almost edges it behind. The ball does not carry to Niroshan Dickwella.
Mathews immediately asks his keeper to come up a couple of paces...
0.2 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Opportunity missed. A poor ball, short and wide outside off, Sharma slaps it but straight to point.
0.3 : A Mathews to R Sharma, This one cuts back in from outside off, from a length, RS defends watchfully.
0.4 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Outside off, pushed to point.
0.5 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Similar ball, played straight to point again.
0.6 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Outside off, left alone. A MAIDEN to start.
SURANGA LAKMAL, the wrecker-in-chief in the previous game, to bowl with the second new ball.
1.1 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, FOUR! CARESSED! What a way to get off the mark! Half volley outside off, a gentle loosener from Lakmal but Dhawan does not want any sighters. Leans into the shot and drives it through the covers for a boundary!
1.2 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, On the pads, flicked through square leg. Should have been just a single but a misfield doubles that.
1.3 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Comes around the wicket, cuts this into the southpaw, Dhawan punches it towards cover.
1.4 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, On middle, played straight to short mid-wicket.
1.5 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Short and outside off, too close to play the cut but Dhawan does so and mistimes it to point.
1.6 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Full on middle, pushed beautifully but straight to mid on. Just one bad ball from that over.
2.1 : A Mathews to R Sharma, On a length outside off, cutting in, Rohit looks to defend tentatively and gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
2.2 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Outside off, solidly defended this time.
2.3 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Banged in short, Rohit finally plays a confident shot, swivels on his back foot and pulls this but there is a man in the deep. Just a single to mid-wicket. Gets off the mark.
2.4 : A Mathews to S Dhawan, Good running. The ball is landed on a length outside off, Dhawan initially looks to punch this down the ground but the ball comes slowly off the surface. He adjusts well and pushes it towards mid off, takes Pathirana on and completes the single.
2.5 : A Mathews to R Sharma, A misfield. Short and outside off, Rohit guides it towards third man. Danushka Gunathilaka dives to his left and should have stuck his left hand out but he ends up reaching first. So to avoid his face getting hit, he sticks out his right hand and hence ends up parrying it away from the slips. A single easily completed.
2.6 : A Mathews to S Dhawan, Banged in short, pulled through square leg for a single.
3.1 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Outside off, Dhawan punches it through the covers where Akila Dananjaya dives to his left and makes a partial stop. Just a single.

3.4 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, Landed outside off, left alone.
3.5 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, FOUR! CLASSY! This looks a perfect pitch for batting. Half volley outside off, Rohit comes on the front foot and drives it on the up through the covers for a boundary!
3.6 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, Works this wide of mid-wicket for a single.
4.1 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Landed on middle, Rohit looks to flick but is a tad early and gets a leading edge back to Mathews, which does not carry.
4.2 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Full and outside off, watchfully defended.
4.3 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Landed on middle, Rohit looks to defend but misses and is hit on the pads.
4.4 : A Mathews to R Sharma, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
4.5 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Stays back and pushes it towards point.
4.6 : A Mathews to R Sharma, FOUR! Slashed away! Short and wide outside off, Rohit goes after it and gets it wide of the slip cordon and over them to the third man fence! The fielder is pretty square and cannot get there!
5.1 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, FOUR! He is looking good today. Short and wide outside off, Dhawan frees his arms and crashes it through the covers for a boundary! Moves to 13 from 10 balls.
5.2 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, This is on a length, cutting in from outside off, around the wicket, Shikhar waits for tyhe ball to come to him, goes on his back foot and then tucks it through square leg for a couple.
5.3 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, On off and middle, pushed down the ground.
5.4 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Outside off, pushed straight to cover-point.
5.5 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, The batsman has punched that ball through the off side.
5.6 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Played to the point region by the batsman.
6.1 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Half volley outside off, swinging away, Rohit shoulders arms.
6.2 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Around off, coming in, watchfully tapped towards cover.
6.3 : A Mathews to R Sharma, Outside off, Rohit waits for the ball to come to him and then dabs it to third man for a single.
6.4 : A Mathews to S Dhawan, Landed on middle, Dhawan looks to steer it to third man but the late movement makes the ball beat the outside edge.
6.5 : A Mathews to S Dhawan, Wow. Comes down the track thinking premeditatedly to do something but Mathews bowls this just outside off, on a length and the batsman chooses to let it go.
6.6 : A Mathews to S Dhawan, Unlucky for Dhawan! This is a beautiful shot. Once again Shikhar comes down the track and drives this straight down the ground. It should have been a boundary but it hits the middle of the middle stump at the other end.
7.1 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, Good running. Waits for the ball to come to him and taps it towards cover for a quick single.
7.2 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Works this straight to square leg.
7.3 : S Lakmal to S Dhawan, Flicks this past square leg this time for a single.
7.4 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, Comes down the track but is not quite to the pitch of the ball and is forced to defend.
7.5 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, The batsman comes down the track but misses it completely.
7.6 : S Lakmal to R Sharma, Outside off, quietly left alone.
First bowling change. CAPTAIN THISARA PERERA takes the ball in his hand.
8.1 : T Perera to S Dhawan, WIDE. A short ball down the leg side, Dhawan looks to pull but misses.
T Perera to S Dhawan, Good bowling. Lands this right on middle, Shikhar looks to flick but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
8.2 : T Perera to S Dhawan, LBW appeal, turned down. Dhawan comes down the track and looks to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. Thisara is confident and appeals but umpire Nandan thinks for a while and then shakes his head. Thisara thinks it is close and wants a review, but first he asks Mathews, who coolly says, pitching outside leg. Thisara does not agree but a firm Mathews says 'NO'. Hawk Eye shows the pitching to be indeed outside leg while to the naked eye, the impact seemed to be out
8.3 : T Perera to S Dhawan, On middle, flicked away for a single.
8.4 : T Perera to R Sharma, Outside off, cutting in, left alone.
8.5 : T Perera to R Sharma, Ooh.... in that corridor of uncertainty, Rohit has a lazy waft and nearly edges it.
8.6 : T Perera to R Sharma, Clips this through mid-wicket and retains the strike for the next over.
Double change. NUWAN PRADEEP to bowl as well.
9.1 : N Pradeep to R Sharma, On middle and off, Rohit clips this through mid-wicket, takes the single, wants the second but is sent back.
9.2 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Outside off, punched off the back foot straight to cover.
9.3 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
9.4 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Outside off, pushed to the off side, a single wanted but refused by the non-striker.
9.5 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, He is playing some wonderful shots but not able to pierce the strong off side cordon. On a length outside off, Shikhar drives this beautifully but straight to cover-point.
Fine leg comes up while square leg drops back.
9.6 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Wide outside off, SD slashes hard but misses. Could have been a wide but the bowler gets away with that one.
POWERPLAY 2 time. Four fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the 40th over.
10.1 : T Perera to R Sharma, Outside off, punched off the back foot, on the up, but straight to Akila Dananjaya at sweeper cover for a single.
10.2 : T Perera to S Dhawan, Comes down the track but Perera shortens the length and the batsman is forced to defend.
10.3 : T Perera to S Dhawan, FOUR! Up and over! Once again, Dhawan is down the track but this time Thisara does not shorten his length. It is full enough and just where the batsman wants it to be. Just goes through with the shot and lofts it as clean as a whistle over mid off. One bounce and into the ropes. Moves to 21 from 30 balls.
10.4 : T Perera to S Dhawan, FOUR! Expected. At least that is what a good batsman will say. Normally when a seam bowler gets hit for a boundary on a full ball, he tries to correct himself by bowling short on the next one. Dhawan is expecting the short ball and is happier that is misdirected. Down the leg side, Dhawan ferociously pulls it down to the fine leg fence.
10.5 : T Perera to S Dhawan, Short and wide outside off, slapped to sweeper cover for a single.
10.6 : T Perera to R Sharma, Around off, Rohit just clips this through mid-wicket and comes back for two. 12 from the over, the biggest of this innings so far.
11.1 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Short and outside off, punched through cover for a single.
11.2 : N Pradeep to R Sharma, Around off, clipped through mid-wicket for a run.

11.6 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, The batsman defends it from within the crease.
12.1 : T Perera to R Sharma, Landed outside off, dabbed to third man for a single to bring up the 50-RUN STAND. Massive difference after being 7 down for the same score three days ago.
12.2 : T Perera to S Dhawan, Banged in short, pulled uppishly but wide of short mid-wicket for a brace. Moves to 30 from 36 balls.

12.6 : T Perera to S Dhawan, The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. One run added to the total.
13.1 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, FOUR! Edged away! Probably the first opportunity created by Sri Lanka today. Pradeep lands this around middle and Dhawan is already down the track, looking ti impose himself. However, he is not quite to the pitch of the ball and gets an outside edge as he looks to drive. The ball goes to the slip cordon but there is no one present. A boundary to Dhawan.
13.2 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Down the leg side, Shikhar flicks it through mid-wicket and has got timing on it. Asela Gunaratne charges to his right from the deep and dives full length to prevent the boundary. Keeps the batsmen to two. Oopss... who was that? Someone came in the middle as Gunaratne threw the ball towards the bowler. He wanted to stop it but got hit on the knee instead!
13.3 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, FOUR! He is teeing off now. Banged in short, down the leg side, Dhawan pulls it to the fine leg fence! Moves to 42 from 42 balls with 6 fours!
13.4 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, Full and outside off, driven straight to mid off.
13.5 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, FOUR! CREAMED! Short and wide outside off, Dhawan crashes this through point and gets the third boundary of the over! Already the most expensive over of the innings.
13.6 : N Pradeep to S Dhawan, 1 run.
Spin being brought in. AKILA DANANJAYA to bowl now.
14.1 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, 1 run.
14.2 : A Dananjaya to R Sharma, Works this through the leg side for a run.
14.3 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, FIFTY FOR DHAWAN! His 23rd in this format. Short and outside off, Shikhar punches this through the covers who should have stopped that but ends up parrying it to the deep. Two runs taken. Fine knock from the southpaw. Started slowly but is now making amends. Perfect platform for the middle order.
14.4 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, No run.
14.5 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, 1 run.
14.6 : A Dananjaya to R Sharma, No run.

15.3 : T Perera to R Sharma, Another long hop, down the leg side this time, helped to fine leg for one more.
15.4 : T Perera to S Dhawan, Full and outside off, Dhawan comes down the track and drives it powerfully but Perera gets down low to stop it.
15.5 : T Perera to S Dhawan, FOUR! Rubbish from Thisara. Short and outside off, asking to be hit, Dhawan obliges and bludgeons this pull through mid-wicket.
15.6 : T Perera to S Dhawan, Pushes this through mid on and takes a quick single.
16.1 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, Full and outside off, Dhawan comes forward and defends.
16.2 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, The batsman gets to the pitch of the ball and defends it. They pick up a single.
16.3 : A Dananjaya to R Sharma, Landed outside off, punched off the back foot.
16.4 : A Dananjaya to R Sharma, Short again, cut behind point for a couple.
16.5 : A Dananjaya to R Sharma, Fuller on middle, attempted wrong 'un, pushed towards long on for a run.
16.6 : A Dananjaya to S Dhawan, On the pads, clipped through mid-wicket for one more.
DRINKS BREAK. Nice platform set for India. They have learnt from the mistakes committed in Dharamsala. The openers have seen off the tough period with the new balls, perhaps played a couple of loose shots but not gifted their wickets away. Now, the pitch has seemingly started to play better and it is visible from the fact that Dhawan is upping the ante.
More spin. SACHITH PATHIRANA to bowl now.
17.1 : S Pathirana to S Dhawan, Down the leg side, Dhawan goes back and flicks it through mid-wicket for a single. Moves to 60 from 57 balls.

17.3 : S Pathirana to R Sharma, On middle, pushed back to the bowler.
17.4 : S Pathirana to R Sharma, Poor stuff from the bowler. Full and outside off, Rohit drives it down the ground. Pathirana is not far from the ball, should have dived but he chooses not to and the ball goes through to long off. A run taken. Moves to 30 from 49 balls.
17.5 : S Pathirana to S Dhawan, On middle and leg, flicked straight to short mid-wicket.
Howzzatttt? Pathirana reckons he has his man but there seems to be too much doubt whether the batsman has hit it. Eventually, they do not take the review.
17.6 : S Pathirana to S Dhawan, Close call actually! Have Sri Lanka let go of one? Very, very confusing, to be honest, with too many parameters involved. This was very full and Dhawan missed his flick, getting hit on the pads. Pathirana appealed vociferously and was confident that he had his man. He wanted Thisara to go for the review but the usual suspicions arose - Pitched outside leg? Inside edge? Eventually, the captain decided to be safe and did not review. Well, replays show PITCHING IN LIN

Sadeera Samarawickrama, on as a substitute, hared to his right, got to the ball, dived full length but then instead of stopping it, parried it uppishly, as they generally do when there is a fielder backing up. No one here and the poor youngster has to search the ball. Eventually spots it but concedes the third run.

26.5 : N Pradeep to R Sharma, SIX! Never easy to play a full off the front foot but Sharma is an artist at that. Short ball on middle, Sharma hammers it over mid-wicket. Doesn't seem initially that he has got all of it but the ball sails over wide long on with ease.

A breathtaking effort from the Indians! Take a bow, Rohit Sharma! He is a genius when it comes to converting those starts into big daddy hundreds. Third double century for him in ODI cricket. The way he paced his innings deserves a lot of appreciation, picking out his shots to perfection and toying with the bowling.
Earlier, Dhawan and Rohit Sharma provided the ideal platform for the middle order to capitalize upon. Dhawan missed out on a ton but the skipper carried on. He found an able ally in the young Shreyas Iyer who showed great composure and played some eye-catching strokes himself.
Too many bowling changes from the visitors in the middle overs. Poor captaincy from Perera. You need to give your bowlers time to settle into a rhythm. Pradeep crossed 100 and was the most expensive. Even Lakmal was off color after a stupendous first game. That is what happens when the batsmen come out with aggressive intent and execute what they desire. Only Dananjaya and Mathews went at under 6 as the others were tonked around the park.
A mammoth ask for the tourists to achieve this target. The morale will be down and the pressure to go right from the word go is likely to take a toll on them. Can they rise above themselves and make a match out of this one? Or will India continue the one-way traffic and cruise to a victory and level the series? Let's find out in a short while.
Shreyas Iyer says that he is happy to have got that score. Adds that yesterday he was batting in the nets and took great confidence from how he felt. Adds that he just tries to go and express himself on the field. On the pitch, he says that it is a nice batting track and a very good total. If India pick up a 3 quick wickets, they should be in a very good position. On his talks with Rohit, he says that they decided they will bat normally till the 40th over and then explode given the batting line-

Hard to say whether it is a leg gully as the fielder is a bit squarer but whatever it is or wherever he is placed, it is a wicket. Let us say short backward square leg in this case. 46.4 : B Kumar to A Mathews, SECOND ODI HUNDRED for Mathews. Has worked hard to get here but not quite sure whether he will be entirely happy. No intent, probably because the team got knocked out of the chase pretty early. Still, a hundred is a hundred. He works this to the leg side and sets off for a single. Rohit Sharma gets across to his right but then fumbles and Mathews takes the second. Now he clutches his right leg and is in some discomfort.
46.5 : B Kumar to A Mathews, Banged in short, pulled through square leg for a single.
46.6 : B Kumar to S Lakmal, Well, Lakmal is free to throw his bat around now and swings it over mid-wicket. Makes not that sweet a connection and that slows the ball down. Shreyas Iyer comes charging to his left and dives to prevent the boundary. Two runs taken.

Applause. The match ends. India win eventually but that was probably decided in the 45th over of the Indian innings itself. Sri Lanka never looked like being in the chase even for a small period.
When you chase anything as high as 393, you cannot afford to take your time. You need to go for your shots but Sri Lanka could not even start looking for big hits. They were 30/2 in no time and then Thirimanne and Mathews started to play some shots.
If this had been a normal run chase, then the partnership between Thirimanne and Mathews, and then the next two would have been efficient. Technically, one look at the scorecard and one would say that the Lankans did well to stay there in the middle - 129 runs for wickets 3-5 in 137 balls. But by then, the required run rate and the chance to win had gone beyond the roof.
Amongst the positives for Sri Lanka in this chase, only Asela Gunaratne seemed to show some intent. Mathews seemed happier to be amongst the runs than try and get some motive going. He did manage 111 but those were not of much use.
Plenty of rights for India in this game after the wrongs in Dharamsala. The openers played really well early on, then Shreyas Iyer shrugged off his nerves at number 3 and in the bowling, even with the dew, they were pretty economical. They would have preferred to bowl Sri Lanka out but this is as comprehensive a win as any other.
Shikhar Dhawan says that he was happy with his flow of batting. Adds that he would have liked to continue but unfortunately things did not go his way. Says that they thought the wicket would be damp and the ball was coming on a bit slowly but he was confident of playing his shots which helped both him and Rohit Sharma. On his advancing to the faster bowlers, Shikhar says that he did the same to shift the bowlers out of their regular lengths. He admits that those lengths have been troubling him,
Sri Lankan captain, THISARA PERERA manages to flash a smile even after this defeat. Says that the bowling did not click, hence they lost. But is quick to say that this is cricket and such things happen. Adds that they will take the positives out of this game and flush out all the negatives. On stopping Rohit Sharma, he says that the Lankans had plan A, B and C but none clicked. Further says that to chase big totals like these, they needed to have a good start at the top and later in the middle a
Victorious Indian captain and the MAN OF THE MATCH, ROHIT SHARMA smiles and says winning the game was more important. Praises his team for the comeback. Says he can keep on talking about the batting today. First Shikhar Dhawan for the start and then Shreyas Iyer who did not look nervous at all in his second game. Then praises his bowlers for sticking to their lines and lengths in spite of the dew. On his double hundred today, he says that on the previous two occasions where he hit the double hun
That is it from the game then. 1-1 in this 3-match series and we have a decider, not what many would have hoped for before the ODI series.
