Go glam, with Michael Kors

The iconic fashion designer tells Amy Fernandes what makes a woman sporty, sexy and glam

Go glam, with Michael Kors

You believe that 'Beauty is heightened reality'. Can you please elaborate on this thought?
I think about beauty and colour the same way that I think about fashion. It's about a heightened sense of reality, being the best version of yourself. This requires a collection of essentials. I want women to feel their best selves—and beauty is a big part of that. With both, my clothes and beauty, I want it to be easy for women. It shouldn't take a lifetime to find your perfect date night lipstick or daytime perfume. That was the idea behind Sporty, Sexy, Glam; I wanted to create the colours and fragrances that could fit any woman's mood throughout the day or week.

What was the inspiration behind the 'Sporty.Sexy.Glam' collection?
My inspiration comes from the women in my life. I've always been interested in their layers. For instance, my mom was usually sporty. She always had a suntan and she never spent more than two minutes on her make-up, before she was out of the door. My grandmother was a bit glam. She was an indulgent fragrance user. It was always in her bath, on her wrists, behind her ears. And then I had an aunt who basically wore a bikini top and hip-huggers to my Bar Mitzvah. So Sporty, Sexy, Glam were the three moods that I really saw when I was growing up, and then as a designer I realized that most women kind of move in and out of these three different moods throughout their days or weeks. Can a woman have a mood for perfumes and what role does fragrance play in accentuating these moodsFor me, the Michael Kors woman has three main moods—Sporty, Sexy and Glam. Sometimes you want to feel sporty and effortless; sometimes you want to be glamorous and indulgent; and sometimes you want to be unabashedly sexy. Most women have all three inside of them. And sometimes they turn the volume up or down on one of those three elements, depending on the mood or the moment. This collection is centered on my fragrances, which is the most intimate thing I have created. I've always been fascinated by the strong connection between scent and memory. Different fragrances transport us to different moments and different times. You want to change it from when you're running around town to when you're getting ready for a date. I picked these three moods, because I think they're the ones that women feel most often—sometimes all in one day.

What is the trend in make-overs today, over-the-top or nude?
I don't think there are any set rules. Wear whatever makes you feel amazing. The real foundation of beauty is healthy, glowing skin, no matter where a woman falls on the mood spectrum. That glow may take on different hues, but it always sends the same message. It always equals a life well-lived.

Any beauty tips you would want to give to the Indian women?
Makeup should not be a mask. The Sporty, Sexy, Glam woman exudes an easy, carefree beauty that looks like it took about two seconds. Don't cover the texture of your skin. It should glow. Make up should enhance your own beauty, not cover you up.
