She gets what she sees

Scribbler, scribe, traveller Chandrima Pal takes you through the sexual landscape of today

She gets what she sees

Ask any woman who is single and open to the idea of companionship, what kind of a man would she like. She is most likely to say: “Someone who makes me laugh, is well groomed, good looking, doesn’t judge me, or won’t try to change me.”

She is unlikely to say: “Sexy, or all 100 shades of grey.” Even if she does, you would not mind. She will most definitely never say she wants a pot-bellied, bald, nondescript person. Or a guy whose idea of a great time is watching football on the telly with beer and tortillas. In fact, if you ever wondered what happened to that super sharp, super hot girl from college who was on every guy’s wish list, look here.

Ask a man the same question. He is likely to scratch his head and shuffle his feet and break into a sweat. It is tough being a man these days. Because you can never ever speak your mind without being judged or trolled. If you say you like sexy women, you are a perv. If you say you want your woman to be a great mom to your kids, you are regressive. If you say you want your woman to make you laugh, you probably need a shrink. And if you say you want a woman who will not try to judge you, or change you, you are too arrogant. If you are a man who doesn’t care about your appearance, you are probably a junkie. If you are someone who goes for a weekly mani-pedi, you are vain. If you are too well dressed for your job... “are you gay”?

The romance about the idea of companionship is mostly fed to us by the media. Secretly, all we want is the other half, often overlooking all the other boxes that can never be ticked.

I recalled a meme that was doing the rounds on a Beauty and the Beast spoof. It swapped the genders of the characters — the beast was a woman, dancing with a handsome prince. “This can never happen because men will always judge a woman by her looks.” I would read this story differently. I would say, only a woman has the ability to see the potential in a lump of lard.
